The leading candidate to become Benfica’s next president, João Noronha Lopes, has publicly disclosed his position on the potential appointment of Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim.

Amorim facing fight to keep his United job

Amorim is under pressure at United amidst the club’s dismal start to the 2025/26 season. Sunday’s defeat at the hands of Manchester City means that United have suffered two league losses, won one and drawn one of their opening four fixtures.

City made light work of the Red Devils at the Etihad, raising further questions about whether Amorim is the right man for the job.

At the moment, it’s understood that club bosses are still backing Amorim, but that faith is guaranteed to be tested if results don’t improve drastically.

However, as speculation over Amorim’s Old Trafford future mounts, there have been suggestions that Benfica are prepared to hand him a career lifeline.

A report covered by The Peoples Person highlighted that Lopes, alongside other high-ranking chiefs were present at the Etihad to watch Amorim’s United in action.

But, Lopes has insisted he has no desire to contribute to Benfica’s “instability” by chasing Amorim, who has a contract with United.

Benfica’s stance on Amorim

Lopes told reporters [as quoted by ESPN], “Ruben Amorim? He’s a great coach, he has a contract with Manchester United.”

“He is a Benfica fan. Of course I like him. I don’t have a contract for Ruben to sign. Bruno Lage will be Benfica’s coach, naturally. I will work with him, as he is Benfica’s coach. I will not be a factor in Benfica’s instability.”

On being at the derby, Lopes answered, “We went to Manchester to watch the derby and took the opportunity to hold meetings and prepare for Benfica’s future. I didn’t meet with [Manchester City’ Portuguese midfielder] Bernardo [Silva] or Ruben [Amorim] before the game.”

“Ruben is under contract with Manchester United, and I don’t comment on Manchester United’s results.”

Amorim will be hoping to get a win and relieve some of the pressure on his shoulders when United host Chelsea on Sunday.
