Benfica have moved to safeguard their stance on José Mourinho’s future as the new season approaches.

Record reports that the 10-day window in his September 2025 contract has expired, and the club now want 16 million euros to approve any departure, with his deal running to summer 2027.

Real Madrid’s presidential elections are expected within two weeks. If Florentino Pérez wins, viewed as the most likely scenario, he would need to meet Rui Costa’s asking price to hire Mourinho.

Such a move could leave Benfica with a sizeable windfall. Mourinho joined the club after the sacking of Bruno Lage.

The board are weighing exit scenarios while also exploring Marco Silva, who is out of contract at Fulham, as a potential successor. The Portuguese coach has confirmed receiving an offer to renew.

Silva is viewed by the Rui Costa-led hierarchy as the favourite to follow Mourinho. If he does not come to Portugal, the club have no plan to pursue César Peixoto.
