An unusual half-time promotion at Estádio da Luz sparked a backlash among Benfica supporters during the 29th round meeting with Nacional. According to Glorioso 1904, the stadium announcer urged fans to shout the sponsor Norauto’s name.

Benfica beat Nacional 2-0 in the Liga Portugal Betclic fixture. During the interval, the announcer asked the crowd to alternate regular club chants with repeated calls of the brand name, a sponsor linked to the club.

While the Benfica chants were met with enthusiasm, the response to the brand was markedly cooler, signalling discomfort in the stands.

The moment drew criticism across social media, with many supporters deeming it out of step with the club’s usual matchday atmosphere. Benfica remain third in the league.

Benfica visit Sporting on Sunday 19 April in the 30th round, kick-off 18h00 at Estádio José Alvalade.
