Benfica midfielder Enzo Barrenechea, the club’s No 5, will undergo surgery on a left knee injury and could be sidelined for about two months, ruling him out of the Clássico at Porto.
On Saturday, the club said in a statement that he sustained a sprain to his left knee resulting in a tear of the medial meniscus and will have an operation, adding that no precise recovery timetable was given.
The update arrived on the eve of the trip to Estádio do Dragão. Earlier the same day, Marco Silva had admitted the Argentine was a doubt for the meeting with Porto.
The absence is significant given Barrenechea’s rise under the Portuguese coach. After being viewed as potentially available for transfer at the end of last season, his standing changed following Silva’s arrival.
Barrenechea started nine of Benfica’s first 13 matches this season, establishing himself in the side. He now faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
