Benjamin Sesko has found his feet at Man United since the turn of the year

Manchester United should target Victor Osimhen this summer as Benjamin Sesko’s move “has not quite worked”.

This is the view of former Man United midfielder Nicky Butt, with the rather surprising claim coming at a time when Sesko appears to have found his feet after a difficult start to life at Old Trafford.

The striker was widely criticised on social media for taking the tenth penalty in the Carabao Cup second round shoot-out loss to Grimsby and has scored just two goals in his first 17 appearances for United in all competitions.

However, Sesko’s improvement has coincided with the departure of Ruben Amorim as head coach, netting eight goals in just 11 games - including four in his last six Premier League appearances.

Despite this though, Butt has warned that the Slovenia international remains unproven, making the comparison with Rasmus Hojlund who is spending the season on loan with Napoli.

Speaking to Paddy Power, Butt said: "It’s a difficult job to recruit players and maybe you go and find someone with potential but they keep doing that and it doesn’t quite work.

"Sesko has not quite worked. It’s the same mistake as Rasmus Hojlund. A young, unproven striker, a lot of money, too much weight on his shoulders.

“He’s scored a few goals and done well over the last few weeks but he’s not been a roaring success.

“Sesko might be ready in two or three years but not right now and definitely not in the Champions League."

Butt added that Galatasaray and Nigeria striker Osimhen should be a top priority for United this summer with a return to the Champions League for next season a strong possibility.

"I think he’d be the one. You’d like to think that players from Turkish sides are gettable,” Butt explained. The recruitment team will not only look at the best players, but you’re looking at the ones that are gettable.

“You’re wasting time on certain players that you’re not going to get if they cost £120million.

“I think he’s powerful, quick, he can run in behind, he’s strong, has got a good touch, can score different types of goals, he’s good in the air.”
