Benjamin Sesko: Why belief is growing at Man United that their £74m ace will be a massive hit

Benjamin Sesko appears destined for greatness, and the word emerging from Carrington only reinforces that belief.

Manchester United spent around £74 million last summer to persuade RB Leipzig to part with the Slovenian striker.

For such a hefty fee, the expectation was clear: the Red Devils had finally solved their long‑standing striker problem. Many even suggested the 20-time English champions had secured their own version of Erling Haaland.

United’s own Haaland

Sesko shares a strikingly similar physical profile to the Manchester City star: explosive pace, towering at 6ft 4in, and the ability to bully defences.

Both operate as classic target men, holding the ball up, linking play, and offering an outlet for long passes, crosses and set‑pieces.

A slow start at Old Trafford

With those attributes, many expected the 22‑year‑old to make an instant impact.

Yet, truthfully, his start has been far from spectacular. There have been flashes of brilliance, but they have been overshadowed by a modest return of five goals in 19 league appearances. The hope was that Sesko would be rattling in goals left, right and centre, cementing himself among the league’s top scorers.

Encouragingly, signs of progress are beginning to show. Four goals in his last four outings suggest he is finally finding rhythm. And now Rio Ferdinand has offered further insight into why it may only be a matter of time before Sesko truly explodes.

Ferdinand on what Sesko is like at Carrington

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Rio Ferdinand Presents, the United legend revealed what he has been hearing from insiders at Carrington:

“What I would say about him from people on the training ground is his attitude is first class.

“He’s in every day, early, ready to prepare for training, ready to do the extras before training, getting his body right, to make sure that he is ready to go out there and give his best every day in training; no stone is left unturned.

“And they say, especially for a young kid, his mindset and his attitude has been first class.”

Such dedication, passion and determination could yet prove decisive.

If Sesko lives up to the hype, it will be frightening, not for United, but for their opponents.

Heroic cameo and Tottenham test

Despite his fine scoring run, Sesko is still waiting for a start under caretaker boss Michael Carrick. His most recent cameo, however, was nothing short of heroic. Off the bench against Fulham, he struck in extra time to seal a dramatic 3‑2 victory.

Attention now turns to Saturday’s clash with Tottenham Hotspur. The question is whether Carrick will reward Sesko’s form with a place in the starting XI, and whether the young striker can continue his rise towards the greatness so many at Carrington believe is inevitable.
