Benjamin Stambouli confirms retirement at 36 after titles with Montpellier and PSG | OneFootball

Benjamin Stambouli has announced his retirement at 36, having won Ligue 1 with Montpellier in 2012 and PSG in 2016.

According to Le Progres, the midfielder made 165 Ligue 1 appearances and finished his playing days at Metz across the past two seasons, in Ligue 1 then Ligue 2.

A Montpellier academy graduate and Under-21 international, he later played for Tottenham, Schalke 04 and in Türkiye with Adana Demirspor, before returning to Reims and Metz.

He was part of Montpellier’s 1990 cohort with Rémy Cabella and Younès Belhanda that lifted the Coupe Gambardella in 2009, then helped deliver the club’s surprise 2012 title ahead of PSG, who had been taken over by Qatar Investment Authority a year earlier.

During 2015-16 at PSG he won the Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue, making 39 appearances.

Stambouli said it felt the right moment to move on to another life, and called the 2012 triumph the emotional peak of his career.

Son of former academy chief Henri Stambouli and grandson of ex AS Monaco coach Gérard Banide, the Marseille-born midfielder now plans to go into coaching, hoping to start his badges in 2027 and to complete several courses before then.
