Benji is just warming up, wait until he gets in full flow

Benjamin Nygren scored a superb and vital goal in the 3-1 win over Feyenoord in Rotterdam on Thursday night…

That fantastic effort which clinched the three points was Benji’s 12th goal contribution in just 22 appearances for the club, and once again underlines his talent, and proves why he’s a vital member of our squad.

Benji has faced his fair share of criticism since arriving in Glasgow after a £2 million summer move from FC Nordsjaelland.

It’s fair to say that he has divided opinion, probably because he’s not really settled into his best position, having been deployed in various roles, including a few attempts as a right winger. The blame for that shouldn’t really be on the Swedish midfielder but those responsible for leaving the gap in the Celtic squad after pocketing £17m from Como for Nicolas Kuhn.

The Swedish international has come under fire from the more over critical section of our supporters due to some poor performances, but what they have to remember is that he’s not long in the door and needs time to adapt to the Scottish game.

Most of the players get this treatment, although some more that others, Scales (remarkably), Ralston and now Nygren fall into the group vacated by Adam Idah in late summer – afterwards he talked about there been a lot of hate up at Celtic.

Benji was highly regarded after numerous impressive performances for Danish side FC Nordsjaelland, and was rightly heralded as something of a coup when he was persuaded to make Glasgow his next career destination.

I do understand why Benji gets some stick, as he can frustrate a little, especially in front of goal, but his numbers are actually very impressive, and that’s him just warming up.

Seven goals and five assists in 22 appearances is mighty impressive for a midfield player. Wait until he’s in full flow under Wilfried Nancy…
