Benoît Bastien used his stadium microphone to explain a key decision to supporters during Lyon’s home match against Lorient on 12 April 2026 at Groupama Stadium.

In the 68th minute he informed the crowd that, after reviewing a potential spot-kick, there had been a prior foul by Lorient’s number 77, so the final decision was no penalty and a free-kick to Lyon. L'Équipe notes this was the first time in Ligue 1 a referee addressed spectators to outline a decision.

The initial infringement was committed by Katseris, which preceded Moreira’s foul on Dieng.

Referees in France have previously been fitted with microphones, but none had used them to explain a decision in the stadium until now.

The match will be remembered in the competition’s history for its pioneering in-game communication.
