Rodrigo Bentancur has been banned for seven games and fined £100,000 by the FA for alleged racist comments made about team-mate Heung-Min Son in an interview.

It was alleged that the Tottenham midfielder breached FA Rule E3.1 as he “acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words and/or brought the game into disrepute”.

The FA say it was further alleged that the comments made constitute an “aggravated breach” as it included a reference – whether express or implied – to nationality and/or race and/or ethnic origin.

Bentancur denied the charge but an independent regulatory commission found it to be proven.

The Uruguayan will still be able to play in the Europa League as it stands.

But he will not return to domestic action until December 26 and will miss Premier League matches against Manchester City, Fulham, Bournemouth, Chelsea, Southampton and Liverpool plus Spurs’ League Cup quarter-final against Manchester United.
