Inter’s ability to secure an emphatic 5-0 win at Verona with a highly-rotated side is a sign that people should ‘trust’ coach Simone Inzaghi, according to former Nerazzurri player Beppe Bergomi.

Inzaghi’s choice to start Joaquin Correa, who had only played 38 minutes in Serie A before the Stadio Bentegodi fixture, left many surprised but saw the manager eventually be repaid by his forward, who scored the opener and assisted two goals on Saturday.

Relying on the Argentinean to replace Lautaro Martinez, who did not make the Inter squad for Verona, was just Inzaghi’s latest move to manage his players’ energy with a view to a busy fixture-list, which Bergomi believes to be the ‘right strategy’ despite the criticism that the coach has faced during the opening stretch of this season.

Bergomi: Inzaghi following the ‘right strategy’, Inter world should ‘trust’ him

“I’d like to highlight something: every one of us, especially the Inter world, should trust Simone Inzaghi,” Bergomi told Sky Sport Italia, as quoted by FC Inter 1908.

“Because he’s always getting criticised: ‘He changes seven players, he makes Correa play, and so on…’.

“But then, after all, he got nine wins and two draws from the last 11 games, rotating many players and also dealing with injuries – maybe not severe ones, but there were muscular lesions for Calhanoglu, Acerbi, Zielinski…

“He faced difficulties in every department, but he’s doing well in the way he’s managing the players. It’s the right strategy, because you have to stay in the top four.”

According to the Opta Analyst statistics, Inter have overtaken Manchester City to become the best club in the world, ending Pep Guardiola’s reign at the top of such ranking after more than 600 days.

Inter’s win against Verona on Saturday was followed by victories of Atalanta, Napoli, Fiorentina and Lazio, meaning the Partenopei are still Serie A leaders with 29 points, with four teams sitting one point behind them, including the Nerazzurri.
