Manchester United have made contact with Tottenham Hotspur over a potential deal for Sweden midfielder Lucas Bergvall, as the club pursues a third midfield signing to complete their summer engine-room rebuild.

United have already wrapped up deals for Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa and Andrey Santos from Chelsea, and midfield has been a clear priority for the club this summer. The Ederson deal from Atalanta, which had been lined up as the third acquisition, collapsed due to medical issues, leaving the club back in the market.

The Bergvall contact was reported by a popular transfer account on X, citing sources who claim United reached out to Spurs with interest in the 19-year-old. That account puts Tottenham’s asking price in the region of £50m–£55m.

Bergvall wants out of Spurs

Bergvall spent last season in and out of the side under three different managers at Spurs. Fabrizio Romano has explained that the Sweden international has told Tottenham he wants regular football and views a summer exit as necessary, particularly following the arrivals of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes and with no European football on offer at the club.

Romano said of the situation: “Let’s see what Bergvall decides to do but for sure the situation of Lucas Bergvall is one to watch in the next days because he is expected to leave Tottenham Hotspur.”

Romano reported that both Nottingham Forest and Newcastle are actively working on deals for Bergvall, with Forest currently making the highest financial proposal and Newcastle pitching a competitive project. United’s emergence adds a third credible Premier League suitor to a situation that is, by Romano’s own assessment, close to a resolution.

Price tag and competition

Brighton are also reported to be willing to match Tottenham’s £60m asking price for Bergvall, making this a four-club race at minimum. That level of Premier League competition will likely stiffen Spurs’ resolve on valuation rather than soften it.

United will need to move with purpose. Forest and Newcastle have a head start in talks, and Brighton’s financial willingness to meet the asking price means the Reds cannot afford to sit back and wait for a discount that almost certainly will not come.
