Bernardo Silva is closing in on a move to Real Madrid after leaving Manchester City as a free agent.

According to Cadena SER, the midfielder was on the verge of joining Atlético Madrid, with full agreement in place and a signing planned for Thursday, the only morning Portugal were set to release him. The move did not happen, with Silva instead rejecting Atlético as he wanted to work with José Mourinho at Real Madrid.

Fabrizio Romano reports that Silva has an agreement with Madrid on a two-year contract, with an option to remain until the summer of 2028.

At 31, he is said to have turned down richer offers to keep competing at the highest level in Europe.

He is also said to have set aside a potential switch to Barcelona, prioritising Madrid. After nine seasons at Manchester City, where he won the major domestic and international honours, he is preparing for a new challenge at one of the game’s biggest clubs.
