Andrea Berta is lining up a move for Wolves forward Matheus Cunha as he prepares to take the reins as Arsenal sporting director.
Berta is close to finalising a deal that will see him succeed Edu as Arsenal’s sporting director, where he will work closely with Mikel Arteta to improve the squad.
The Italian spent more than a decade at Atletico Madrid, who he helped compete at the top end of La Liga alongside Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Berta is understood to be keen to make a statement signing and is eyeing Cunha. The 53-year-old was responsible for the deal that took Cunha to Atletico Madrid from Hertha Berlin in 2021.
Though Cunha failed to live up to expectations in the Spanish capital, he has evolved into one of the Premier League’s most coveted talents at Wolves.
The Brazil international has scored 13 goals and laid on four assists in 24 league starts for Wolves this season, despite Vitor Pereira’s team struggling near the foot of the table.
Several top clubs are interested and Spanish outlet Fichajes claim Arsenal leading the chase. Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest also expressed interest in the midfielder during the January transfer window. Cunha has a release clause of £62.5 million, which was agreed in the new contract he signed at Molineux earlier this year.
