Betis caught out by new five-second throw-in rule

Fran García became the first to be penalised by the new five-second throw-in rule on Friday, as Real Betis lost possession. According to Diario Vasco, the 26/27 season also brings VAR checks on awarded corners, while non-awarded corners are not reviewed, changes some fans already saw at the World Cup.

After 35 minutes of the first half, the former Real Madrid left-back delayed a throw-in and referee Díaz de Mera handed the ball to Real, judging that he was wasting time.

The law is clear. If a player deliberately delays a throw-in, the referee signals, then a five-second count starts. The restart must be taken within that window or the throw is given to the opposition.

The change is intended to cut stoppages. Last season’s eight-second limit for goalkeepers was cited as effective, with few corners awarded for time breaches.

Betis were not alone in frustration. At the Metropolitano on Wednesday, Atlético Madrid’s Carlos Martín also exceeded the five seconds against Málaga, and Cordero Vega gave possession to the Andalusian side.
