Grêmio’s record after mid-season breaks has varied, strong in 2018 and 2019, but in 2025 they did not improve and fought relegation until late.

According to Globo.com, stoppages typically arrive for World Cups, some Copa América editions and, since last year, FIFA’s new Club World Cup.

The 2025 Brasileirão paused after 12 rounds with Grêmio 11th on 16 points. On resumption they won the Recopa Gaúcha 2-0 against São José, then lost 4-1 to Cruzeiro, and were knocked out by Alianza Lima in the Sudamericana playoffs.

Safety came only in the 36th round with a 3-2 win over Palmeiras. They finished ninth on 49 points, missing the Libertadores. Post-pause league record was 26 matches, nine wins, six draws and 11 defeats, a 42.3% return.

In 2019 the league stopped after nine rounds, Grêmio sat 11th with 11 points and returned with an eight-match unbeaten run across three competitions.

They later exited the Libertadores to Flamengo and the Copa do Brasil to Athletico-PR, but finished fourth with 65 points. Post-pause league numbers were 29 games, 16 wins, six draws and seven defeats, 62%.

In 2018 play halted after 12 rounds with Grêmio fifth on 20 points. The second half included a Libertadores semi-final defeat to River Plate and a Copa do Brasil quarter-final exit to Flamengo. They ended fourth with 66 points, posting 26 games, 13 wins, seven draws and six defeats after the pause, a 59% return.
