A convincing victory for Juventus Women First Team in their first match of 2025: the Bianconere claimed a 3-0 victory over Sampdoria at ‘Pozzo-La Marmora’ in Biella, with the damage done in the first half thanks to goals from Valentina Bergamaschi (8’), Eva Schatzer (28’) and Cristiana Girelli (40').

Three precious points that see Massimiliano Canzi's team to climb to 38 points after 14 matches played in this regular season.

It was an afternoon at ‘Pozzo-La Marmora’ that saw Barbara Bonansea awarded a commemorative plaque by Stefano Braghin – Women’s Football Director – prior to kick-off, to celebrate her achievement of playing 200 matches for the Bianconere. A feat she achieved when Juventus Women took on Valerenga in the Women's Champions League last December 18, 2024.

THE MATCH REPORT

FIRST HALF: BERGAMASCHI, SCHATZER AND GIRELLI MAKE IT THREE

The opening exchanges of the match was dominated by Juventus and, in fact, it took just 8 minutes for the Bianconere to open the scoring in Biella: Paulina Krumbiegel the provider as Bergamaschi slotted into an empty net to score one of the easiest goals of her career, 1-0. A goal claimed by Bergamaschi, but for which Krumbiegel deserves a lot of credit, as she did incredibly well to overcome the opposing defence and get to the by-line before playing the pass under great pressure.

A few minutes later, however, Krumbiegel was unlucky and, after being fouled on the edge of the area, she was unfortunately forced to come off through injury. Lindsey Thomas came on in her place.

The story of the match didn’t change as Sampdoria struggled to react and the Bianconere remained in control of proceedings.

In the 28th minute the sustained Juve pressure led to them doubling their advantage, courtesy of Schatzer. A shot from distance, following Lisa Boattin's pass, that caught Amanda Tampieri off guard to make it 2-0.

A few minutes later, in the 32nd minute, it was again Juventus who came close to scoring as Thomas's header hit the crossbar after Hanna Bennison's excellent cross.

Sampdoria were on the back foot and the hosts continued to push forward, In the 34th minute it was Chiara Beccari who had a good opportunity to score, but her volleyed attempt following Bennison's cross went over the crossbar.

Five minutes prior to the interval, however, the Bianconere grabbed a well-deserved third thanks to Girelli with one of her trademark headers that beat Tampieri and marks her ninth league goal of the season - 3-0. The move had started following some excellent work by Sofia Cantore who then put in a perfect cross from the right to set up Juve’s number 10.

Before the half-time whistle there was time for Sampdoria's first, ableit timid, effort on goal through Nicole Arcangeli, one of the many former Bianconere players back on the pitch this afternoon. No problem for Pauline Peyraud-Magnin.

SECOND HALF: JUVENTUS IN TOTAL CONTROL

The second half began with another super opportunity for Juventus, who went close to making it 4-0 when Emma Kullberg's header from close range missed the target by centimetres. Conversely to the first half, however, after the missed opportunity at one end, Sampdoria threatened to respond through a dangerous effort by Sara Baldi, that had the Bianconere backline worried.

In truth that was to be a rare Sampdoria attack, as they had to spend much of the second period dealing with the continuous Juventus pressure. It was a second half that saw the introduction of both Alisha Lehmann and Azzurra Gallo, as well as Bianconere debuts for Abi Brighton and Mathilde Harviken.

At the fulltime whistle, the score remained unchanged, leaving Juve victorious. Another important win for the Bianconere.

MASSIMILIANO CANZI

“The approach was the right one, we found the early goal that made everything easier for us because these matches risk becoming complicated if you can't break the deadlock early on. Instead, the girls were good at controlling the game right from the outset. Even in the second half we didn't find the goal, but we had a lot of chances and continued to create opportunities. I will watch the match between Inter and Roma, also because they will be our next two opponents: right now we are ahead and we knew this match was important to extend our lead and see what they do. On [Eva] Schatzer, I think her performance speaks for itself: she showed great humility, her attitude has always been excellent and she immediately showed potential to develop. I didn't think she could mature so much in such a short time: she did well and I have no doubt that she will continue on this path, I am very happy with her performance.

“The physical aspect is one of the keys to this team, we have and are working hard: we put great emphasis on these aspects, the girls work hard because we believe that intensity is fundamental to our game. Then there is the quality that our players display on the pitch, we as a staff must put them in a position to do the best possible. We will assess [Paulina] Krumbiegel's injury over the next few days, we have a lot of matches coming up and we hope it's nothing serious: [Lindsey] Thomas came in without warming up and did well, managing to make an impact straight away. The two new arrivals with us have done two training sessions, today I did not think I would play them because they haven’t played for a while and cannot be at peak physcial condition: they have begun to integrate into the squad well, they are two girls who know how what it means to be part of a team, from a tactical point of view they are settling in and it will take time.

“We are masters of our own destiny, we have earned the points to get ahead of the other title challengers with our performances and we had to work for them. Positive results against Roma and Inter would be important for us to get what we want at the end of the year, the Coppa Italia quarter-final against Lazio on the other hand will be a two-legged match which we will go into as equals, a different competition from the league and very challenging.”

EVA SCHATZER

“I am very happy with the goal, but the most important thing today was to win and we did it. We wanted to do our part to start 2025 in the best possible way and we did it. I'm a quiet person by nature, my teammates help me a lot on the pitch and during training in Vinovo - that's why I can maintain this attitude on the pitch. I get lots of advice, they explain how to approach the match, they give me confidence. I try to take a bit from each one and do my best. I hope to end the season continuing to develop as I am now, I hope I will continue on this path for a long time because then I will be very satisfied.”

VALENTINA BERGAMASCHI

“I am happy with the team's approach in this first match of the year, we are a great group that wants to continue working hard to achieve our goals and we are on the right path. I always put myself at the disposal of the group, trying to give words of encouragement to my teammates: all I can do is keep working and give my best. Coach Canzi has given character and charisma to the group: a strength that has allowed us to face these months at our best, we never give up and we want to achieve our ambitious goals. There is always room for improvement, we continue to believe in what we do with the desire to improve day after day.”
