The Canaries have endured a miserable campaign so far, with the team sitting 23rd in the table and four points from safety.

So, Manning was coming under huge pressure from the fans, and he was sacked after the 2-1 defeat at home to Leicester City last time out.

Gary O’Neil will not become the new Norwich City boss

Since then, attention has turned to naming his replacement, and a host of names have been linked with the vacancy - including O’Neil, who is out of work after leaving Wolves last year.

With the 42-year-old having managed Bournemouth and the Old Gold in the Premier League, along with his experience of playing for Norwich during his career, it’s fair to say O’Neil would’ve been a sensible choice for the Canaries.

It has been widely reported that Norwich held talks with O’Neil over the role, but, in a fresh development, the Pink’Un has confirmed that he will not be the new boss.

Jon Dahl Tomasson remains an active option for Norwich, who are also in talks with two ‘unknown candidates’ as they look to make a decision, although it remains to be seen whether that will happen before the trip to Birmingham City on Saturday.

Naturally, the update involving O’Neil was a major talking point, and it’s fair to say the supporters were generally upset that he wouldn’t be returning to Carrow Road…

Meanwhile, this supporter admitted he was looking forward to seeing how O'Neil would improve this squad who have struggled.

Another feels Norwich are destined for relegation after they failed to appoint O'Neil.

This fan admitted he was 'gutted' at this development.

Those thoughts were echoed by another Norwich City fan.

Norwich City hierarchy must get this managerial decision right as pressure builds

There will be plenty of debate over any name put forward, but there were a lot of positives to O'Neil, as he did very well to keep Bournemouth in the Premier League against all odds in his first managerial gig.

He followed that up with a good year at Wolves, and whilst things turned sour quickly, he still has a good reputation in the game, and this would've been a coup for Norwich.

Of course, we don't know the reasons for this development, and it will be interesting to see whether it was Norwich or O'Neil who decided not to continue with the talks.

Ultimately, though, the only thing that matters for Norwich is getting the right person in, and there is a massive spotlight on the hierarchy at Carrow Road considering the mistakes that have been made.

Plus, they are in a very precarious position, and even though promotion was the aim before the season started, the reality is that they are facing the prospect of dropping to League One, so whoever does come in will know that they need to get results quickly otherwise this terrible start to the season could turn into a disastrous one in Norwich's history.
