Sunderland are working to strengthen this summer, with the first addition still awaited. Florent Ghisolfi is pressing on with target identification and groundwork.
Sunderland Echo notes there are clear pointers to the roles being chased and the profiles preferred.
They start pre-season short at full back, Dennis Cirkin has left on a free and Lutsharel Geertruida’s RB Leipzig loan has ended. Hume can cover, but another is needed. Sunderland remain interested in Geertruida, the option has expired so a new, preferably lower, fee must be negotiated and the player is likely to take time after the World Cup.
At centre-back, Omar Alderete excelled last season, yet extra cover is required for a heavier schedule. Luke O’Nien adds depth and a longer-term addition is being sought. Jhon Lucumí is again mentioned with one year left at Bologna, while Sassuolo’s Bosnian international Tarik Muharemović and Parma’s Mariano Troilo, both 23, have been linked.
Out wide, two natural wingers are preferred after Bertrand Traoré’s exit. There is interest in Matías Soulé, whom Ghisolfi initially brought to AS Roma, a one-v-one threat who can also play inside as Le Bris wants.
Soulé would command a significant fee. Sunderland are targeting fewer, higher-calibre signings and will invest major sums, so patience is vital. After selling Eliezer Mayenda to Stade Rennais, further forward cover may be needed, and if interest in Wilson Isidor does progress, though there are no indications yet, they would return to the market.
