Manchester United look set to make a dream addition to their midfield this week. The Red Devils reinforced the position by signing Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans this summer.
However, the midfield was crying out for an out-and-out ball winner in the mould of Casemiro, who left as a free agent this summer. With Manuel Ugarte rupturing his ACL at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the English giants lack a little steel in the middle of the park.
Recent reports, however, suggest that United are very close to securing the services of long-term target Carlos Baleba. The Cameroonian has been on the Red Devils’ radar for a while and was linked with a move to Old Trafford last summer as well.
While the move failed to materialise in 2025, it now appears to be nearing completion this year. The developments, understandably, have generated tremendous excitement among fans, but former United skipper Roy Keane has urged caution regarding the matter.
Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Keane acknowledged that Baleba is a good midfielder, but insisted that his arrival will not be enough for United to win the Premier League. When asked if the Cameroonian’s arrival hands the Red Devils a good midfield, the Irishman said: “I think that’s a good way of putting it, a good midfield.”
“But if you’re on about winning the league, I think it’s short. United’s big problems are still going to be defensively. That midfield and going forward, there is a big goal threat at United, they were very good last year with it, especially when Carrick took over they were a real goal threat.”
“But the issue is at the back, the full-backs and the two centre-halves are still a big issue. But on paper, they [the midfield] jump out as really good players. But is there a league-winning midfield there? Probably not. No, I don’t see it.”
Baleba was outstanding for Brighton & Hove Albion in the 2024/25 campaign, but endured a dip in form last season. He is currently recovering from an ankle injury picked up in pre-season, and is expected to be sidelined for two to three weeks.
The fiery Irishman also labelled Tielemans as a ‘safety bet’, arguing that the Belgian cannot inspire the Red Devils to the Premier League title either. Keane added: “I think he’s a good player. But I don’t think it [the signing] wins the league.”
“Tielemans is a safety bet for United. Over the last few years, Casemiro is a good example, players have come in huge money, big wages.”
“Tielemans knows the Premier League, is a good international, having gone to Old Trafford with Vila and had success he will be fine with the expectation. But will he get United to the very top? No.”
Tielemans is already being tipped to have a huge impact at the Theatre of Dreams. The Belgian was indispensable for Aston Villa last season, helping them win the Europa League.
Keane’s concerns about United’s backline are not far-fetched, but it may be too early to rule out both Tielemans and Baleba. Fans, as such, have every reason to look ahead to the new season with optimism.
