Millwall are set to complete the impressive capture of Luton Town star Alfie Doughty
Millwall are closing in on the ambitious acquisition of Luton Town star Alfie Doughty, with the wing-back now poised to undertake a medical ahead of his switch to The Den following an agreement between the two sides.
As reported on Monday morning via X by Daniel Marsh of The Mirror, Doughty is set to sign for Millwall after a seemingly-significant breakthrough in negotiations over his transfer within the last 24 hours.
Indeed, just yesterday, Marsh reported that Millwall were working on a deal to bring Doughty back to the Championship following Luton's relegation to League One at the end of the 2024/25 campaign, and their pursuit of his signature appears to have moved rather swiftly.
Doughty is now lined up to represent Millwall's sixth signing of the summer transfer window, with Alex Neil having struck permanent deals for two of last term's loanees in Josh Coburn and Zak Sturge, along with the signings of Max Crocombe, Massimo Luongo and Steven Benda.
The arrival of Doughty, however, is undoubtedly Millwall's most significant to date and marks a clear statement of intent from the Lions as they bid to improve on last season's eighth-placed finish and force their way into the division's top-six.
Millwall will commence their 2025/26 season away to Norwich City next Saturday.
The Lions are set to win the race for Doughty's signature in a saga which has taken up real pace as of late.
Marsh's previous report detailed how Millwall had entered talks with Luton in an effort to try and complete a deal for Doughty, who was described as being willing to return to the Championship and was left out of the Hatters' squad for their pre-season draw at home to Tottenham Hotspur over the weekend owing to transfer speculation as boss Matt Bloomfield revealed interest "all through the summer" in his prized asset.
It was reported that Millwall had "made a play" to sign Doughty before Luton's season opener against AFC Wimbledon at Kenilworth Road on Friday evening, and their efforts have now come to fruition.
The subsequent update has now revealed that Doughty is preparing to undertake medical proceedings in order to complete his permanent move to Millwall.
For the time being, it remains unclear exactly how much Millwall will be paying to take the 25-year-old back to the second-tier, although it will surely come as a sizable outlay considering his status and importance to Luton as well as the fact he put pen to paper on a long-term contract extension less than twelve months ago.
Doughty impressed last season in spite of Luton's relegation to League One, catching the eye in his 26 Championship appearances before missing the back-end of the campaign through injury.
The season before, however, in the Premier League, Doughty was even more impressive and turned heads with a haul of eight assists, having helped Luton to promotion in his first season with the club after joining from Stoke City.
Millwall's impending signing of Doughty is a seriously impressive one, with the versatile wide-man having established himself as a top-bracket Championship operator in recent times.
Dynamic and creative, he's capable of setting the tempo just about anywhere down the left-hand side of the pitch and his deliveries into the area offer a huge outlet.
Because of this, his addition will only be good news for star striker Mihailo Ivanovic, who is expected to kick on further in the event that he remains a Millwall player after enjoying a stunning upturn in goalscoring fortunes during the latter stages of last season under Neil.
Interestingly, it's said that Millwall intend on using Doughty as a winger, as opposed to a left-sided wing-back, where he has played much of his football for Luton.
But there's little doubt that the ex-Charlton Athletic and Cardiff City man possesses the requisite attacking tools to be used higher up the pitch, and Millwall will have surely beaten off some rather fierce competition to secure his services in what could prove a real coup for the Lions heading into next season and beyond.
