Sheffield Wednesday supporters have been reacting to the news that the club are just days away from being served with a winding-up petition.
The off-field crisis at Sheffield Wednesday under Dejphon Chansiri took another worrying turn on Thursday as it was revealed that the club are just days away from being served with a winding-up petition.
It has been a nightmare few months for Wednesday, and their financial problems have seen them hit with a number of sanctions, with the club unable to pay transfer fees for the next three windows after paying the wages of players and staff late on multiple occasions.
The Owls are also currently under five separate transfer embargoes, but a sixth embargo was lifted this week after Chansiri finally completed payment of September's wages, over two weeks after they were originally due, albeit he was only able to do so after the club received a basic award payment from the EFL.
Wednesday supporters have staged frequent protests against Chansiri this season, and the latest demonstration is planned for Wednesday night, with fans being urged to boycott the game against Middlesbrough at Hillsborough, but despite growing pressure, he is not believed to be open to a full sale at this stage and is instead seeking fresh investment.
However, while Chansiri may be reluctant to sell, there is thought to be plenty of interest in the Owls, with former Crystal Palace co-owner John Textor confirming last week that he remains keen on completing a takeover of the club, while ex-Newcastle United chief Mike Ashley and businessman David Richards are also said to be monitoring the situation.
Wednesday supporters have become accustomed to seeing bad news about their club in recent times, but perhaps the most serious development of the current saga came on Thursday as the Daily Mail revealed that the South Yorkshire outfit are just days away from being hit with a winding-up petition.
The size of the tax bill owed to HMRC is unknown, but it is believed to be around £750,000, and should the petition be issued and Chansiri is unable to settle the debt, he may have no option but to put the club into administration, which is only a decision he could make as he is the sole director at Hillsborough.
The Owls are already expected to be given a points deduction for their wage breaches, and going into administration would result in an automatic 12-point penalty, which would make relegation to League One almost certain, but it could also mark the end of the Chansiri era and accelerate the sale process.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday's trip to Charlton Athletic, Wednesday manager Henrik Pedersen confirmed he was aware of the reports of an imminent winding-up petition, describing the situation as "not good", but while he revealed he had been in contact with Chansiri this week, he insisted their discussions had been about other topics.
As Owls supporters digest the latest developments involving their club, many have taken to X to voice their opinions in response to a post by BBC Radio Sheffield's Rob Staton announcing the news, and some of the reactions have been somewhat surprising.
In normal circumstances, the threat of a winding-up petition being issued would strike fear into the hearts of supporters, but many Wednesday fans instead had a positive reaction to the news, expressing their hope that it could help to bring Chansiri's tenure to an end.
Those sentiments were echoed by plenty of other Owls supporters, and some suggested that it could be easier for interested parties such as Textor or Ashley to complete a deal to buy the club if it was to go into administration.
However, the optimistic mood was not shared by all Wednesday supporters, and one fan warned that while the winding-up petition may be necessary to remove Chansiri, it is not something that should be celebrated.
