Bilbao still working to host 2030 World Cup, says mayor | OneFootball

Bilbao is pressing on with plans to be a 2030 World Cup host city, mayor Juan Mari Aburto has said, after rows over the venue bid, including an initial idea to share with Donostia, and the lack of a municipal big screen for last Sunday’s final. Aburto explained that with the 2026 tournament concluded, they are waiting to move into work for 2030, which he believes could be very important for Bilbao. He highlighted the city’s infrastructure and the decision to build the new San Mamés, noting that some who now celebrate the World Cup bid once opposed the stadium.

He said he understands FIFA is eager to come to Bilbao and hopes that can happen. He also met last week with the presidents of the Spanish and Basque rugby federations to advance bids for the 2035 men’s and 2037 women’s Rugby World Cups.

The mayor sent congratulations to Spain coach De la Fuente and Athletic’s Laporte, Nico Williams and Simón on winning the World Cup, adding that he has long-standing ties with De la Fuente and Laporte and messaged them before and after the final. Two replied quickly, one has not yet, and some are on holiday. He has not planned a civic tribute for that reason, though he is happy to recognise them publicly.

Aburto condemned the incidents in Bilbao on the night of the final as unacceptable and called for respect and coexistence. He questioned why there was no similar dispute when Athletic won the Copa after 40 years without a city screen. He said he has not politicised the issue, described his stance as consistent, and urged an end to an artificial row.
