Billy Bremner honoured in his home city | OneFootball

Iconic Leeds United captain Billy Bremner has been inducted into the new City of Stirling Football Hall of Fame. His daughter Amanda Llevick collected the award on his behalf from the Lord Provost of Stirling.

The Stirling Hall of Fame was launched by the Scottish Football Supporters Association at the end of August at an event hosted by BBC Sportsound's Richard Gordon and attended by around 150 guests. Bremner was one of five inaugural inductees alongside Duncan Ferguson, Alex Smith, Jimmy Ryan and Jimmy Bone.

The Hall of Fame concept was introduced on the night by SFSA co-founder Paul Goodwin, whose idea it was, developed with the late Bone.

Bremner was born in the Raploch on 9 December 1942 and joined United aged 17. In nearly two decades at Elland Road, he made more than 770 appearances and scored 115 goals, captaining the club through the Don Revie years to two league titles, the FA Cup, the League Cup and two Inter Cities Fairs Cups. Leeds supporters have since voted him the greatest player in our history.

The connection between Bremner and the venue chosen for the Hall of Fame runs deeper than geography. As a child he was a ball boy at Stirling Albion and trained on the club’s Annfield pitch while playing for Gowanhill Juniors. In October 1973, at the peak of his career, he brought his Leeds side north to Annfield for his testimonial, drawing Stirling Albion’s biggest crowd of that season.

Bremner is now commemorated permanently on a Wall of Fame at Forthbank Stadium in Stirling, alongside a digital archive here.

The SFSA is also fundraising for a statue of Bremner in the Raploch, the Stirling housing scheme where he grew up. It would be the second statue of him, after the one that has stood outside Elland Road since 1999.
