Birmingham City and Wrexham in transfer race to sign midfielder | OneFootball

A transfer update has emerged regarding Wrexham and Birmingham City target Romeo Amane of Rapid Vienna, with Sheffield United also keen.

Birmingham City and Wrexham have developed one of the Championship's newest rivalries, fuelled largely by the ambition and financial backing of their respective ownership groups.

Now in the Championship, their battle first gathered momentum in League One, where both clubs invested heavily in pursuit of promotion and ultimately achieved that objective together.

Rather than settling for simply consolidating in the second tier, neither club has lowered its expectations since stepping up. Both Birmingham City and Wrexham have continued to push the boat out in the transfer market, arguably spending more aggressively than any Championship side not benefiting from Premier League parachute payments.

That willingness to invest reflects a shared determination to establish themselves among the division's leading clubs, which is where they are expected to be yet again this season, as promotion will once again be the aim in 2026/27.

Particularly with the play-offs now extending to eighth place, there is more expectation. That expansion only strengthens the belief of both clubs that a route to the Premier League is now achievable, especially as Wrexham would have secured a play-off berth under the new format after narrowly missing out with the previous top-six system.

Because of their respective financial situations, they are always likely to be eyeing a similar calibre of player that many other clubs cannot afford in the second tier. That appears apparent, with Ligue 1 sides Lens and Rennes in competition for a target of the two Championship sides.

The French sides are joined by Wrexham and Birmingham in chasing Rapid Vienna midfielder Romeo Amane, according to journalist Pete O'Rourke. The 23-year-old has only been with the Austrian side for a year-and-a-half.

Amane was born in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. He began his football career in his home country with ASEC Mimosas before moving to Europe to continue his development.

Swedish side BK Hacken swooped and he made 98 appearances for the club, scoring seven and assisting a further 10 in that time. He won the Allsvenskan in 2022, too.

Moving on to his time in Austria, his last 18 months has seen him make 63 appearances. In that time, he scored two and assisted four. He has already made a professional appearance this season, featuring in UEFA Champions League qualifying against FC Santa Coloma.

He missed the second leg due to an ankle sprain, which also saw the midfielder miss an OFB-Cup clash in the last few days as well.
