Scott Wright currently remains on Blues' books despite being omitted from their Championship squad

Birmingham City have been backed to offload Scottish winger, Scott Wright, in the January transfer window after he was the subject of a recent call from Chris Davies.

Blues are looking to compete for promotion from the Championship to the Premier League in the near future, with the plans of American ownership group, Knighthead Capital Management, certainly well-documented at this moment in time.

Tom Wagner has provided Davies with ample support in the transfer market since he became Birmingham manager in June 2024, but not all of those additions have proven to be a success.

After returning to the second tier as record-breaking League One champions last term, the West Midlands outfit were fancied to mount a bid for the play-offs for the first time in 14 years, but they were never really in and amongst said conversation despite a handful of high-profile arrivals at St. Andrew's @ Knighthead Park.

This summer saw the number of players added to the squad in B9 take a massive decrease, with only seven coming through the door whilst a total of five leaving the club on either a permanent or temporary basis.

However, as is the case with many supporters, Football League World's Birmingham City fan pundit, Jason Moore, is surprised that Wright remains at the club after being omitted from Davies' 25-man squad between now and January.

Wright arrived in the West Midlands from Scottish Premiership giants, Rangers, in August 2024 for a reported £300,000 fee, and marked his debut with a last-gasp winner against Wigan Athletic.

The former Scotland youth international made 20 appearances in all competitions before sustaining a serious knee injury against Reading in February 2025, which curtailed his campaign and left him sidelined until last December.

After returning to fitness, the 29-year-old also struggled to make an impact on loan with Dundee FC, and whilst it was expected he would find a new club this summer, he has remained on Birmingham's books but cannot play competitively for the next two-and-a-half months at least.

Speaking to FLW about what the winger's immediate future could look like, Moore said: "I mean, he's just a glorified 'pace merchant'. It's who takes him.

"He had an absolutely horrendous injury that ruled him out for nine months. I think he did his ACL for us, so it's who takes him.

"He's not good enough for us. I don't think he's Championship level," he claimed. "He's probably low-end Scottish Premiership level and that's at a push. It's who takes him.

"I'm astounded no one has taken him, because even at low-end Scottish level, he'd probably do a job.

"I think it probably reflects really poorly on his agent not being able to get him a move, because it was quite obvious he was never ever going to be a part of our plans," Moore stated.

"He was loaned out in January, and he barely played last season because he wasn't a part of the plans. He's not good enough, and I would like to have thought the club and Chris Davies would have told him he's not a part of our plans.

"He's definitely going to be moved on in January for the sake of his career. I wouldn't be surprised as his contract's up, to be honest. Although, if he's not, there's a mutual termination (as an option)," he added.

"I'm astounded he's not found himself a move because he was never going to be a part of our plans, and he was only average in League One as well, to be fair.

"Poor from his agent, poor from all parties involved in not getting a move, because he's just going to be sat on our books doing absolutely nothing now."

Wright isn't the only first-team player to have missed out on a place in Davies' 25-man squad, with Marc Leonard also suffering such misfortune as he recovers from a ruptured achilles.

Despite featuring in the EFL Cup win over Swansea City and making the substitutes' bench against Wrexham last month, it was revealed exactly why the experienced winger missed out on being involved in the short-term at least.

"Unfortunately for Scott, it’s positional. Bringing in another winger has meant that he’s missed out on the squad," Davies explained.

“He’s a fantastic guy who gives his all and is still with us but not part of the 25-man squad.”

“If it’s not to be that (a sudden transfer) then he will be with us and maybe play some 21s football to keep his fitness up, then soon enough the window will be open and he will look elsewhere probably.”

At this stage of his career, Wright needs to be sourcing regular minutes, especially after his unfortunate injury issues which limited the chance of making an impact for Birmingham after their promotion.

Since then, Davies has added further quality and depth out wide, with Hull City loanee, Liam Millar, making a fast start to life at the club, whilst he is competing with the likes of Demarai Gray, Patrick Roberts and Carlos Vicente for a starting spot.
