Birmingham City have been urged to potentially revisit a move for Ipswich Town playmaker Anis Mehmeti in the January transfer window, even though all Championship sides have only wrapped up their summer business on September 1st.

It has been an intriguing start to the 2026/27 campaign for Chris Davies' side, as they have been rather competitive in all league outings but are still lacking end product in order to turn a draw-heavy start into a strong one.

Birmingham have only won one of their first six matches of the season, which came away at Wrexham through a double from centre-back, Phil Neumann, but have also only been defeated on one occasion, and that came on Wednesday night against Norwich City.

The West Midlands side only made seven additions to Davies' squad throughout the summer - an amount which certainly split opinion - whilst also reining in the amount of money spent to acquire their targets.

However, whilst they were handed a late blow in their pursuit of the Albanian, Football League World's Birmingham City fan pundit, Jason Moore, has revealed why he would like to see the club press forward with a winter move.

Mehmeti has been included in Ipswich's 25-man squad for the Premier League post-Deadline Day, despite the fact the Tractor Boys added the duo of Julio Enciso and Zian Flemming in two high-profile transfers themselves.

Birmingham were one of three Championship sides credited with interest in the playmaker who signed from Bristol City in January, but after it was revealed that Town set a £9m valuation, the player himself was said to be keen on staying at Portman Road.

Davies did later opt to loan in long-term target, Millar, from Hull City instead, which has seen Jay Stansfield move from the left flank back into the 'number 10' role, but Moore believes Mehmeti could add stronger quality in said position.

"I was pretty open during the summer that we needed a '10'," he told FLW.

"What that '10' looked like was down to the club. I would've wanted someone that wanted to be on the ball and find the balls in behind for the striker.

"Mehmeti might not be that, but he's quality in this division and isn't going to get much of a look-in at Ipswich. 100% go for him (in January)," Moore added.

"Only if he wants to come though. I don't want it to be a move where it's 'I'm not playing at Ipswich so I'll come here'. I want him to want to come here.

"If he wants to move and Blues want to explore it, then go for it. Because, if Jay (Stansfield) gets injured, we've got (Marvin) Ducksch, who doesn't want to be here, and (Kanya) Fujimoto, who hasn't played."

Despite being registered as part of Gary O'Neil's 25-man squad, Mehmeti hasn't been involved in competitive action for Ipswich all season so far, having played 18 times and scored twice since his £3.5m switch from Ashton Gate.

However, at Championship level, his quality is undoubted, with it playing a key part in the Robins' 2024/25 play-off push under Liam Manning in particular, where he scored 12 times in 42 appearances.

If Birmingham are in a similar position as the January window nears, then it would make a lot of sense in the eyes of many for this deal to be revisited, although Davies may not exactly see it that way depending on how circumstances unfold.

The aforementioned Stansfield had looked sharp in the '10' role against Southampton and Wolves, despite missing two gilt-edged chances against Tonda Eckert's side before firing home his first of the campaign in Sunday's derby at St. Andrew's.

However, as Moore alluded to, the cases of Ducksch and Fujimoto are indeed intriguing in terms of depth, with the former attracting plenty of summer interest, which included a failed late-window move to Valencia, whilst the Japanese midfielder has remained part of Davies' plans despite only playing 45 minutes' worth of Championship football since his arrival in July of last year.

As such, there is a sense Mehmeti would be a major upgrade in said position, especially if he showed the willingness to complete a potential deal if it arises once more.
