FLW looks at the current Blues players who could realistically be sold or loaned out in winter

Birmingham City have made an encouraging start to the Championship season under Chris Davies as the campaign currently pauses for a lengthy international break.

Blues have lost just one of their first eight league matches so far, but will be hoping to turn a plethora of draws into wins when they return to action against West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns on October 10th.

Under Knighthead's ownership, transfer activity has been a huge talking point at St. Andrew's @ Knighthead Park, with the club certainly the subject of high player turnover in the past three years.

However, only a handful of incomings and outgoings were sanctioned throughout the summer window, which led to a split of opinions from Birmingham supporters.

With that said, there are still some within Davies' squad who have question marks over their immediate or long-term futures, and FLW have looked at those whose careers could be best served by a permanent or temporary January exit.

Brad Mayo

ItThe first of those names comes in the form of 22-year-old goalkeeper, Brad Mayo, who signed a two-year contract extension earlier in 2026.

The Birmingham academy graduate is currently behind James Beadle and Ryan Allsop in Davies' pecking order, but is still yet to make an appearance in senior football for any club after progressing through the ranks.

As such, a loan move in January for the shot-stopper, potentially to a League One or League Two side, could be the best course of action as he has only made the substitutes' bench once so far this season.

Lee Buchanan

Lee Buchanan's time at St. Andrew's has been plagued by injuries and fitness issues, and it feels as though his spell at Blues could be up in the coming months.

The former Derby County man has made just 40 appearances for the club in all competitions, with the last of those in the league coming against Blackpool in December 2024, where he sustained a serious injury.

Buchanan is still included in Davies' current 25-man squad but also finds himself behind Alex Cochrane and Kristoffer Lund, after also being the subject of transfer interest from Luton Town and Reading.

Taylor Gardner-Hickman

Taylor Gardner-Hickman returned to B9 this summer after a mixed loan spell with Blackburn Rovers, but has seen his individual campaign already hit by a pre-season injury sustained against Burton Albion.

Despite his versatility being a key asset for Davies in Blues' League One-winning season, the 24-year-old finds himself down the pecking order in midfield and at right-back.

As such, it would come as no real surprise to see the former Bristol City man move on in January, as he needs to be sourcing regular minutes at this stage of his career.

Marc Leonard

Marc Leonard's career will also be at a crossroads when he returns from a serious achilles injury later in the season, having been omitted from Birmingham's 25-man squad as he steps up his recovery.

The Scottish youth international's move to B9 two summers ago was met with plenty of excitement, but he has since failed to pin down a regular starting role and was loaned out to Hearts in January.

Despite impressing at Tynecastle Park, the midfielder's chances of an expected transfer this summer were put to bed in the cruellest of fashions with said injury blow.

It was also expected that £300,000 winger, Scott Wright, would leave the club this summer after a tough period fitness-wise, but that didn't prove to be the case.

As such, Blues' own transfer plans led to the 29-year-old's own omission from the 25-man squad, meaning his only chance of minutes between now and January will come with the Midlands side's Under-21s.

When asked about the winger's predicament, Football League World's Birmingham City fan pundit, Jason Moore, recently said: "He's not good enough, and I would like to have thought the club and Chris Davies would have told him he's not a part of our plans.

Menzi Mazwi

Another potential loan could be in the offing for Zimbabwean international winger, Menzi Mazwi, who has progressed through Birmingham's academy setup.

The 20-year-old was loaned out to Queen of the South in February but only played one game for the Scottish side, before returning to St. Andrew's and shining in the Under-21s.

Mazwi has three goal contributions in two Premier League 2 appearances so far this term, and even made the bench for the first-team's 2-2 draw with Middlesbrough on September 19th.

Even though Davies hasn't handed many opportunities to academy players in the Second City, a loan move in January could certainly enhance the highly-rated prospect's chances of becoming a future first-team regular.

Marvin Ducksch

It would also be no surprise to see Marvin Ducksch leave Birmingham in January, with the two-time German international generating plenty of exit talk in the summer window.

After his £1.75m switch from Werder Bremen last August, the 32-year-old scored 11 times in all competitions, but has rarely been involved this season, racking up just 42 minutes' worth of Championship action.

Having been involved in well-documented off-pitch controversy in April, Ducksch's chances of leaving the club in the summer appeared to have decreased until a Deadline Day saga unfolded with La Liga side, Valencia.

Birmingham rejected any late advances from the Spanish side due to the attacker's inclusion as a substitute in the 1-1 draw with Southampton that night - a decision which is said to have left Ducksch rather perplexed.
