Birmingham City boss Chris Davies is facing an uncertain future due to their poor form this season.
Birmingham City have endured a disappointing return to the Championship, with the club set for a mid-table finish this season.
Normally, that would be an acceptable return for a newly-promoted club, but given the level of investment that has gone into Blues over the past 18 months, it’s fair to say they have underachieved this season.
Naturally, the spotlight is on Chris Davies for that. Whilst the Birmingham chief was rightly lauded for their record-breaking campaign in the third tier, he has come in for criticism this season, and especially in recent weeks.
Defeats against Blackburn and Ipswich over the Easter period meant they have lost three on the bounce, and, looking back further, Blues have picked up just eight points in their previous ten games.
So, there is plenty of debate surrounding the future of Davies, and, when asked by FLW whether a change was necessary, Birmingham fan pundit Jason Moore was adamant that Davies must be sacked, as he told the hierarchy they’re risking a toxic atmosphere if they don’t make a change.
“He’s got to go. I don’t quite understand how anyone can defend the bloke at this point. He’s not the man to take us forward.
“We’ve gone from a club that was full of a losing culture, and, to be fair to Davies, he came in, he changed the standard and set foundations, but that’s where we stop it now. I think we’re getting really close to the point now where it will get toxic, and I don’t want that for him, as last season was fantastic, and nobody can take that away from him.
“But, you can’t have this level of investment in a squad, and have it 16th. Don’t get me wrong, the players have to take responsibility, as they’ve not been good enough.
“Something that bugs me with Davies is that he was meant to be pragmatic to win football games, but he’s not! He has got one way of playing the game, and that’s it. If that doesn’t work, all he does is sub like-for-like players in the hope that they can do something. It’s just not good enough.
“He has one plan, and if he steps away from it, we’re awful. Derby was an example of that, when he tried to play a back three and we had Ibrahim Osman as a left wing-back and we got terrorised.
“I pray for him and the board that they make the decision, so it doesn’t get toxic. Just let the man go out on a high, because even the most supportive fans of Davies are struggling to back him.
“Just move on, let’s go in a different direction, get someone else in and go again.
“Another thing for Blues, they want to sell season tickets on the basis we will compete (for promotion), but you’re not going to sell them and get the revenue, which we need to splash the cash like we have been, if Davies is in charge. You will get people that won’t renew if he’s in charge.
“We will go backwards with Davies in charge. The only way it would get better is if he gets a transfer kitty of £30m-40m, but why should he? I could go on forever on this subject, but at the end of the day, Davies can’t be our boss next season, and they need to announce it before the end of the campaign and start the process.”
Blues are a hugely ambitious club, with their US owners having put major funds into the club in terms of strengthening the squad.
Obviously, a new stadium is in the pipeline as well, so this is a club that is aiming high, and it’s not just about reaching the Premier League, but establishing Blues at the highest level.

Therefore, this season will be viewed as a failure, so you can understand why many fans will share the view that Davies needs to go.
It’s not as simple as that though, as Davies does have credit in the bank, but ultimately it depends on Tom Wagner and those making the decisions as to how long that lasts.
With the team having little to play for, you would expect Davies to finish the season, and he will be aware that a strong end to the campaign could make the difference in terms of whether he is in the dugout for the opening game of next season.
