Bixente Lizarazu has swiftly hit back at Gérard Lopez, mocking the Bordeaux president’s stewardship in an Instagram post on Thursday evening.
In an interview with L'Équipe on Tuesday, Lopez told him to "parler de foot plutôt que de choses qu'il ne comprend pas".
Lizarazu wrote that he had played nine seasons at what he regards as the best-run club in the world, Bayern Munich, and said he could not understand Lopez’s management, accusing him of killing every club he buys. He ended with a sarcastic sign-off.
Now 56, Lizarazu came through at Bordeaux, spending the first eight seasons of his career there between 1988 and 1996. The 1998 World Cup winner later played for Bayern from 1997 to 2004 and again from 2005 to 2006.
He had already criticised the running of the Girondins alongside former team-mates such as Christophe Dugarry in a previous Instagram post. That message cited €94 million of debt, 400 companies left unpaid, 86 employees laid off, and relegation to N2, finishing with a pointed reference to an ace of finance.
