Bizkaia says Bilbao-San Sebastián 2030 World Cup bid’s rejection would not be a failure | OneFootball

Bizkaia’s provincial council says presenting a joint Bilbao-San Sebastián host plan for the 2030 World Cup is the responsible course, and insists a FIFA rejection would not amount to failure.

As reported by as.com, council spokesperson Leixuri Arrizabalaga said Basque institutions deemed it most reasonable to stand behind one bid after weighing FIFA’s very demanding requirements.

She added it was far more sensible to submit a unified proposal and expressed hope that the new plan would be well received.

Local authorities have made clear they will not accede to the governing body’s demands, a break from recent strategies of spending whatever it took to land events.

Arrizabalaga rejected any suggestion of failure, noting that the region has long collaborated to attract major events, securing many and missing others without calling those outcomes failures.

Should this candidacy fall away, other suitors are waiting to take that option, and a hosting fee of about 70 million has been estimated.
