According to Alan Nixon, the Lancashire outfit are optimistic that the full-back will remain at Ewood Park beyond next summer.

The 27-year-old’s deal runs until 2026, meaning he’d be going into the 2025-26 season with only 12 months left on his contract.

Blackburn will want to avoid losing him for nothing, so an extension would put those fears to bed for the time being.

Brittain joined Blackburn from Barnsley in the summer of 2022 after the Tykes suffered relegation to League One, with a fee of around £1 million being paid to the South Yorkshire outfit.

He has become an important part of the first-team squad at Rovers, featuring 33 times in the Championship last season.

However, his contract is set to expire next year, meaning he’d be free to leave for nothing in 2026 unless an extension is agreed.

It has now been reported that there is confidence that an agreement is close.

Brittain is set to remain with Blackburn beyond his current 2026 expiration date, which will come as a boost for Valerien Ismael going into the transfer market.

Brittain struggled to put together a consistent run of games in his first season with Blackburn, starting just 15 of his 27 appearances in the Championship.

But he grew in importance in the 2023/24 campaign, proving his fitness issues were in the past with 44 appearances from 46 league games racked up, and although that reduced to 32 outings last season, Brittain was one of the better full-backs in the division.

He will now be hoping to remain a key part of the side under Ismael going into next season, with this contract extension now reportedly close.

Brittain has performed well since arriving at Blackburn, and he even had his most prolific campaign for the club in the last 12 months.

He contributed two goals and five assists, with the team just narrowly missing out on a play-off place.

Ismael will be pleased that this extension is agreed, provided no complicating factors prevent a deal now, as it will end any chance of a summer departure this transfer window.

He will want to keep this team together after they just missed out on a top six finish, and instead look to add players to strengthen, although given the departure of CEO Steve Waggott this past week, there is perhaps a bit of uncertainty over what lies ahead behind the scenes at Ewood Park.
