Blackburn Rovers are in talks over a new contract with star defender Danny Batth.
Blackburn Rovers are in talks with centre-back Danny Batth over a new contract to keep him at Ewood Park next season, according to reports.
The 34-year-old joined the club in the summer of 2024, having almost signed for them a year prior. Since his arrival, the defender has been outstanding for the Blue and Whites, which helped them to a much more comfortable season in the Championship than last term.
Batth is out of contract in the summer, but Alan Nixon reported via his Patreon page on Sunday morning that new manager Valerien Ismael is keen to retain the experienced centre-half, who has been a key figure for Blackburn this season.
Featuring in 36 out of 45 league fixtures for his club so far, as well as a further four cup appearances, Batth has helped his side to be involved in a final day battle for a Championship play-off spot, thanks to some imperious performances at the back for Rovers.
Even at the age of 34, Batth is still proving to be an excellent defender in the second tier of English football, following ten years with Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he made over 200 appearances across all competitions for the Midlands club.
After leaving Norwich City last summer, Batth signed for Blackburn having struggled for minutes on a consistent basis at Carrow Road. The move to Ewood Park has seen the 34-year-old roll back the years, putting in some elite performances.
Now with his fourth different club since departing Molineux, reports from Nixon suggest that his current club Blackburn are keen to keep the veteran defender on their books for the upcoming 2025/26 season.
Batth's contract expires at the end of June, which will see him become a free agent if that happens. However, new Rovers boss Ismael is reportedly keen to ensure the former Wolves star will wear the blue and white shirt next season.
Following the departure of Sammie Szmodics in the summer, many thought Blackburn would once again struggle in the Championship and be battling to avoid the drop into League One.
However, with one game to go, they find themselves within touching distance of the play-offs.
Whilst Blackburn making the top six relies on other results going in their favour elsewhere, this season has certainly been a good one in comparison to recent years, and a revistalised Batth has played a huge part in this resurgence for Ismael's side.
After a frustrating year with Norwich where game-time was hard to come by, the defender is showing the Canaries what they missed out on by allowing him to depart Carrow Road in the summer.
The move seems to have breathed new life into the 34-year-old, who continues to roll back the years with his performances.
With that in mind, it would be the best option for all parties to get a new deal sorted quickly for Batth. He'll undoubtedly have suitors elsewhere in the Championship, but his venture to East Anglia last year proved that sometimes, the grass isn't always greener.
