Highlights

  • Blackburn Rovers have already made two new signings and seen two departures in this transfer window.
  • The lack of depth in their first-team squad has been exposed this season, suggesting more incoming signings are needed.
  • Crystal Palace winger Malcolm Ebiowei, who Blackburn were linked with last year, could be a potential target to reinforce their squad.

It has certainly been a rather eventful start to the January transfer window for Blackburn Rovers.

The club have already made two new signings, with left-back Ben Chrisene and midfielder Yasin Ayari joining on loan from Aston Villa and Brighton respectively.

Meanwhile, there have been some eye-catching departures as well, with club captain Lewis Travis linking up with promotion chasing Ipswich Town, and centre back James Hill being recalled from his loan spell at Ewood Park by his parent club Bournemouth.

As a result, it is effectively a case of two in and two out for Rovers so far when it comes to their winter business.

But given the fact that a lack of depth in the first-team squad at Ewood Park has been exposed this season, it seems clear that the number of incomings will have to rise before the window closes on February 1st.

Now there may be an argument that Blackburn ought to revisit their interest in a player they were linked with this time last year, in order to address one area of their squad that may need reinforcement.

Blackburn have previous interest in Crystal Palace winger

Back in last year's January transfer window, journalist Alan Nixon reported that Blackburn held an interest in Crystal Palace winger Malcom Ebiowei.

The young attacker joined Palace in the summer of 2022 on a free transfer, after impressing during the season before that Derby County, as they were relegated to the Championship amid a raft of financial issues.

Ultimately, no move to Ewood Park would materialise for Ebiowei in January, who instead spent the second half of last season on loan elsewhere in the Championship, with Hull City.

However, the changing circumstances for Blackburn and Ebiowei, mean that a move to finally link up the two parties 12 months later, could now make a lot of sense.

Ebiowei touted for January loan move

Since returning to Crystal Palace in the summer following his stint with Hull, Ebiowei has endured a rather frustrating season so far.

The winger is yet to make a single first-team appearance for Roy Hodgson's side during the current campaign.

With that in mind, it has been reported by Football Insider that the 20-year-old has agreed to go out on loan this month, amid interest from a number of EFL clubs, and you feel Blackburn ought to ensure they are on that list of potential destinations.

Back at the end of the summer transfer window, Blackburn's Director of Football Gregg Broughton revealed that the club had missed out on the deadline day signing of a winger on loan.

As a result, that may be a void they are still looking to fill, particularly given Ryan Hedges may need to be eased back into action, having not played since September due to injury.

Indeed, Rovers other options in that position - Dilan Markanday and Andy Moran - have struggled to consistently make an impact this season, with just two goals and five assists in 36 Championship appearances between them this season.

Adding someone such as Ebiowei woud therefore provide Blackburn with a useful extra outlet down their right, with someone who may feel he has a point to prove after his Palace frustrations this season.

Beyond that, while it is limited, the winger does also have some experience of the Championship from his time with Derby and Hull, something Tomasson does seem keen to add to his squad this month.

It is also worth noting that with the winger having thrived in difficult circumstances at Derby to earn his move to the Premier League, trying to help a Blackburn side turn around a run of form that has seen them take just four points from their last eight Championship games.

With all that in mind, you get the feeling that as Blackburn Rovers continue to search for January reinforcements, Ebiowei's availability and attributes, mean he ought to once again, be a potential target.
