Blackburn Rovers have enquired about the availability of Djeidi Gassama from Sheffield Wednesday amid their financial crisis.
According to Alan Nixon, the Lancashire outfit are interested in signing the 21-year-old this summer as they look to bolster their attacking options.
Gassama has spent the last two seasons with the Owls since arriving from French giants PSG, but it was 2024-25 where he really blossomed into a Championship-level attacker.
He has featured 78 times in the second tier of English football since 2023, contributing 10 goals and four assists for the Yorkshire outfit - seven of those goals came last season.
It is unclear as to whether Gassama is a player that has registered their intention to leave Sheffield Wednesday for nothing due to unpaid wages, but news of their £2.5 million cut-price valuation of the Frenchman would suggest he won't be walking away from Hillsborough for free.
When asked about Gassama and his potential £2.5 million value, FLW’s Blackburn fan pundit Simon Middlehurst claimed that it’s an exciting signing if they could pull it off.
He believes the 21-year-old has a bright future ahead of him and that this is a transfer that the club should be pushing for as he could replace Tyrhys Dolan, who is now a free agent after letting his Blackburn contract expire and not putting pen to paper on a new one.
“To be honest, I think he’s quite an exciting prospect,” Middlehurst told Football League World.
“I think if you pay that much money and the talent that he is, it would probably be a good investment long-term.
“I think he’s got a bright future ahead of him, and he’s definitely someone that’s going to be worth a lot more.
“So I genuinely think we should be going all out and making that signing. A definite, someone that we need.
“I think he’s a great replacement for Tyrhys Dolan, who is pretty much certainly going to be signing elsewhere now, he’s let his contract run out at Blackburn.
“So, I definitely think it would be a wise investment.”
Gassama is still only 21 but has built up a strong level of Championship experience at Sheffield Wednesday, and that could be useful to Blackburn and Valerien Ismael.
The Owls’ difficult financial position also puts them under pressure to sell players, so Rovers could take advantage of that.
If he is available for £2.5 million, then it could be worth taking a risk on him given he scored seven goals in the league last season, the same amount as Dolan.
