FLW's Blackburn fan pundit has given his verdict on the club potentially trying to sign Joe Taylor in January

Blackburn Rovers were battling Sheffield Wednesday for the signing of Joe Taylor from Huddersfield Town during the summer.

The forward was linked with a move away from the League One side after his return from a strong loan spell at Wigan Athletic in the second half of 2025/26.

However, the Terriers were able to hold onto the 23-year-old, and he has maintained his positive form from his time with the Latics.

Taylor has scored five goals from seven appearances in League One, and is among the top scorers in the division in these early weeks of the season.

Meanwhile, Blackburn have scored 12 goals total from their opening eight Championship fixtures, with Tony Mowbray’s side earning just nine points.

Rovers are 16th in the table, and may want to revisit their interest in Taylor when the market reopens in January.

When asked about potentially returning for Taylor in January, FLW’s Blackburn fan pundit Simon Middlehurst claimed that it would be a great idea, as the team is currently lacking in good forward options.

However, he believes that any business in the winter market will depend on whether the owners are willing to become more involved with the club.

“Absolutely, again it’s bringing someone else in, someone who has a lot of potential going forward,” Middlehurst told Football League World.

“It will all depend on what happens in January, if the owners decide to come in after visiting the club and wanting to be a bit more involved, which is obviously what happens.

“But, we are lacking strikers obviously.

“[Andri] Gudjohnsen’s back now fit, hopefully he can get back scoring soon, but we’re still missing [Mathias] Jorgensen and [Yuki] Ohashi, so if we can bring more strikers in, get a bit more attacking threat, that would be great.”

Blackburn have won two of their opening eight fixtures, and went into the international break with a 2-2 draw against Portsmouth.

The top scorers in Mowbray’s side so far this season are Dapo Afolyan and Andri Gudjohnsen, who have both found the back of the net on three occasions each.

Ryoya Morishita has also scored twice, while Sean McLoughlin, Kristi Montgomery and Todd Cantwell have all chipped in one goal each as well.

Meanwhile, only Jack Marriott has scored more goals in League One in these early weeks, with the Reading forward finding the back of the net on eight occasions.

Blackburn’s forward options

Jorgensen and Ohashi are both currently out injured, but the pair could both be back in the team by the end of the current international break.

Gudjohnsen is the only other recognised, senior centre-forward among Mowbray’s squad, but Harvey Higgins and Afolyan could also lead the line.

Taylor has a contract with Huddersfield until June 2029, and it remains to be seen whether they could be convinced to sell in January.

Next up for Blackburn is a home clash against Cardiff City on 10 October after the league resumes from the international break.

Joe Taylor approach in January would make sense for Blackburn

The Venky's are unpopular owners at Blackburn, and they have been criticised for years for their lack of investment and interest in the first team squad.

But if they are going to become more involved, then a deal in the upcoming January market for Taylor would be a strong way to indicate to fans that they are serious.

Taylor had a very strong spell on loan with Wigan, scoring 11 goals in 21 games in League One, and he's maintained that positive form into this campaign.

And he could now be ready for the step up to the Championship, and Blackburn should be ready to pounce if an exit is on the cards when the winter market opens in 2027.
