Sheffield United’s search for a new defensive midfielder this summer is already beginning to dominate the conversation around Bramall Lane.

Following the departure of Jairo Riedewald earlier this month, the Blades are now expected to enter the market for a holding midfielder capable of anchoring Chris Wilder’s side as they push for another promotion challenge. One name that continues to surface is Kalvin Phillips.

Blades Looking to Land Kalvin Phillips This Summer

According to reports from The Star, United are seriously considering bringing the Manchester City midfielder back to South Yorkshire on another loan deal. Despite Pep Guardiola’s departure from the Etihad Stadium this summer, Phillips is still expected to leave City in the coming weeks if the financial package suits all parties involved.

On paper, it is an exciting proposition. A fully fit Phillips would arguably be one of the best midfielders in the Championship. His pedigree is undeniable. The Yorkshireman was once regarded as one of the finest holding midfielders in England after starring for Leeds United.

His passing range, positional awareness and ability to control the tempo of a game would instantly improve almost any side in the division. But there is one major problem; availability.

That is why many Sheffield United supporters are understandably hesitant about the club pursuing another move. Over the last four or five years, Phillips has struggled badly with injuries and consistency. The midfielder’s fitness issues have repeatedly disrupted his momentum, whether at Leeds, Manchester City or during his short stint at Bramall Lane last season.

In truth, his previous spell with the Blades never really got going. After arriving during the winter transfer window with plenty of optimism surrounding the move, Phillips managed just three appearances for United. Injuries once again prevented him from building any rhythm, and by the end of the campaign, fans were left wondering what might have been rather than what actually was.

That is the dilemma facing Sheffield United this summer. Do you gamble on a player with top-level quality but major fitness concerns? Or do you pursue a more reliable option, even if the ceiling may not be quite as high?

Sheffield United Supporters Want Vinicius Souza Return

Interestingly, another familiar face has entered the conversation among supporters, and that name is Vinicius Souza.

The Brazilian endured another painful relegation this season after VfL Wolfsburg suffered a 2-1 defeat to Paderborn in the Bundesliga promotion and relegation play-offs. It means Souza has now experienced three relegations in the last four seasons.

When Sheffield United sold Souza for a reported £13 million last summer, many supporters understood the financial reality behind the decision. However, his performances during the 2024/25 Championship campaign remain fresh in the memory.

He became the heartbeat of United’s midfield, shielding the defence superbly and helping the Blades register 22 clean sheets during the regular season. His physicality, aggression and ability to break up play gave Chris Wilder’s side balance throughout the campaign, even if promotion eventually slipped away in heartbreaking fashion during the play-offs.

Unlike Phillips, Souza offered reliability alongside quality. He was consistently available, consistently effective and perfectly suited to the physical demands of Championship football.

Who is the Most Realistic Option For United?

Of course, a return to Bramall Lane feels unlikely at this stage. Wolfsburg would almost certainly demand a sizeable fee, and there would likely be interest from clubs across Europe despite their relegation setback. Financially, Sheffield United may simply be unable to compete. However, it does raise an interesting debate. If the Blades are prepared to invest heavily in wages and loan fees to secure Phillips for another season, would that money not be better spent on pursuing a more dependable premium loan option such as Souza?

Chris Wilder’s side already know what Phillips could potentially offer. The issue is that potential has rarely translated into reality in recent years. That is why many supporters may view Souza as the more appealing premium option, even if bringing him back to Bramall Lane would be significantly harder to pull off, albeit via a loan deal.
