West Ham United’s latest signing Kristie Mewis says that her blue collar mentality makes her a perfect fit for the club.

The United States international midfielder’s move to East London was confirmed yesterday. Mewis will link-up with The Hammers ahead of the second half of the season.

When speaking to West Ham United’s official media team after completing her move, Mewis said that her blue collar mentality will help her slot into life at her new club perfectly.

“I’m a hard worker and I have that blue collar mentality which I feel like West Ham have and are known for,” Mewis said. “That’s me to a tee.

“I will always be hard-working and over the years, I have become a bit of a leader, not a super-vocal leader but I feel like I lead by example and with performance. I have a decent pass, a decent left foot and work hard defensively. Everything that West Ham embodies, I can be that, it is who I am.

“I’m excited to be a part of a cool, blue collar, ‘I can be myself’ kind of club.”

Mewis joins a West Ham United side that currently find themselves in a relegation battle, however, the player sees plenty to be positive about in East London.

She said “Obviously, the team aren’t where they want to be right now but it’s growing and it’s getting better. From what I hear from Rehanne [Skinner], there are so many great pieces but it’s just all got to fit together.

“I’m looking forward to playing with the girls. I’ve watched a couple of the games and they’ve just got so much potential, so much skill. It looks like they could really build something great and I’m excited to jump in and be a part of it.”

After winning the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Championship with NJ/NY Gotham FC, Mewis’ eyes now turn towards Barclays Women’s Super League football. The midfielder believes that there are similarities between the two leagues but she is hoping that playing in England can bring additional qualities out of her game

“One isn’t better than the other, I feel like it is a bit of a different game,” Mewis said. “In the NWSL, it’s a lot of running, a lot of athleticism and very transitional. I know that this league can be like that sometimes as well but there’s a little bit more football played here, more passes are put together and possession is kept a little bit more.

“From the games that I have been watching, you can see that the league is getting better and better every year. I’ve been watching it for a couple of years now and every game is just so good.

“A huge thing that I will bring is my tactical awareness and my technical side. I do think that there’s a lot that I can bring and a lot that I can show, more-so than in the NWSL.”

Mewis will be available for selection for new club West Ham United after the Christmas break.
