After an impressive sixth-place finish in the 2024/25 campaign, Mainz have had a dreadful start to the new season and sit rock bottom of the Bundesliga table after 12 games.
The club’s winless run in the league extended to eight games on Sunday with a 4-0 defeat to Freiburg, casting serious doubt over Bo Henriksen’s future as head coach.
According to Kicker, Henriksen’s job is hanging by a thread, with U23 coach Benjamin Hoffmann being considered as a potential short-term replacement.
“Of course, it’s clear to us that after a game like this, and given our current position in the table, the situation is extremely unsatisfactory, and we will be scrutinizing ourselves in every possible area,” said Mainz sporting director Niko Bungert in an interview with DAZN after Sunday's defeat.
Bungert added that the situation would be “discussed calmly, and we won’t announce anything now or debate it live on television.”
Mainz are next in action against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Friday, but it remains unclear whether Henriksen will still be in charge for that fixture.
