Boavista have ceased operations after 123 years, the club from whom Leeds United signed Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink in 1997.

According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, attempts are being made to launch a phoenix club to keep the name and team alive.

Hasselbaink joined Leeds from Boavista for £2m in the summer of 1997, scoring 42 goals in 87 appearances across two seasons.

Boavista won Portugal’s Primeira Liga for the only time in their history in 2001.

The club were relegated in 2008, and huge financial problems followed. They eventually returned to the top flight, then were relegated again in 2025.

Their registration was refused for Liga 2 and Liga 3, so they began the season in the Porto district league and withdrew after playing just three games.
