Derby County boss John Eustace has hinted at a potential return to Pride Park for popular loan star Bobby Clark

Derby County have enjoyed an uplifting Championship campaign in what has been John Eustace's first full season at Pride Park after taking the reins in February of last year.

Eustace kept Derby in the Championship on the final day of the previous term, and following a productive and ambitious summer transfer window which saw the likes of Patrick Agyemang, Ben Brereton Diaz, Carlton Morris and Lewis Travis all head to Pride Park, the Rams have been contenders to make the play-offs and are poised to secure a top-half finish.

Currently positioned in eighth place ahead of Saturday's showdown at home to Gary Rowett's Oxford United, Derby are five points shy of Hull City in sixth with just four games to spare and, having recently lost star striker Agyemang to a long-term injury, any remaining ambitions of gatecrashing the top-six do appear fanciful.

Therefore, it also seems as though another summer addition in midfielder Bobby Clark has played his final game for Derby - in the 2025/26 campaign, at least - unless Eustace can direct a shock surge into the top-six.

The 21-year-old joined on loan from RB Salzburg last August and has enjoyed an instrumental role in the East Midlands, making 44 appearances across all competitions and establishing himself as a star turn in Eustace's side.

Clark did, however, hobble off with a hamstring strain just nine minutes into Derby's 2-1 defeat at Southampton last weekend, which is now set to keep the ex-Liverpool prodigy sidelined for the next three to four weeks and all-but-concludes his loan stint with the Rams.

But, speaking in preparation for County's clash with Oxford at Pride Park, Eustace confirmed the extent of Clark's injury while dropping a hint on his side's chances of bringing the highly-rated midfield man back to Derbyshire next term in an update which will send tongues wagging among the Rams faithful.

Just last week, Eustace admitted in an interview with Dominic Dietrich of BBC Radio Derbyshire that he is hoping to agree a permanent transfer for Clark once the summer rolls around.

Now, the popular Rams boss has teased the possibility further by hinting at Clark's own stance on heading back to the Championship outfit from Austria for next season and beyond.

Of Clark, Eustace explained to DerbyshireLive on Thursday afternoon: "We probably won't see him again this season, unless we get into the playoff semi-finals.

"So that's something that we've got to keep driving for because we obviously want to see him put a Derby shirt on again this season.

"He's had a bit of bad luck there at the end, but overall he's had a fantastic season. He's an absolute credit to work with and a top lad.

“He's obviously disappointed not to to finish the season with us, we've opened the door up for making sure that the boys do as well as we can now in the last four games to make sure he does play with us again.

"But I know he really enjoys his time here, he's loved the way he's developed, he loves the feel from the fans and from the staff and the players.

"I'm pretty confident that if the opportunity was there for us to sign him for next season, he'd like to come.

"A lot can happen from now till then but he's certainly enjoyed his time here and we've absolutely loved working with him and hopefully we can certainly bring him back next year."

John Eustace would face serious competition for fresh Derby County, Bobby Clark transfer

If one thing does feel certain at this moment in time, it would have to be that any such approach to sign Clark permanently would be accompanied by no shortage of competition throughout the Championship - and potentially beyond the second-tier, too.

The gifted midfielder was strongly linked with a move to Scottish giants Celtic ahead of the January transfer window, and though a move to Parkhead never materialised, there will doubtless be many clubs whose heads have been turned by his performances under Eustace over the course of this season.

Indeed, as the campaign has toiled on, Clark has only grown in authority and consistency to establish himself as one of the standout young talents at Championship level.

A litany of sides with designs on competing for promotion in the 2026/27 season and those coming down from the Premier League could well set their sights on Clark, and while Derby hold a natural advantage after nurturing and platforming his talent and promise all season long, Eustace will be wise enough to know that given just how exciting the former England youth international's potential is, stiff competition for his signature will only be in abundance in the coming months.
