The 25-year-old has proven a key figure for the Sky Blues this season, contributing two goals and four assists from 26 appearances in the league.

Frank Lampard’s side are competing for automatic promotion to the Premier League, and they currently lead the way at the top of the table.

The club have not competed in the top flight since 2001, and they have twice suffered defeat in the play-offs in the last three campaigns.

Thomas joined Coventry from Burnley in the 2023 summer transfer window after their play-off final loss to Luton Town.

His contract is now set to expire in June 2027, meaning he is closing in on the final 12 months of his current deal, raising questions over his long-term future at the CBS Arena.

Thomas has opened up on his future with Coventry amid reported transfer interest from the likes of Everton, Brentford and Leeds United.

The defender has claimed that any discussions regarding a new contract will likely wait until the end of the campaign, as his focus wants to be on helping the club gain promotion to the Premier League.

“To be honest, I was looking at getting this season out of the way and concentrating on doing what we all need to do and get to where we want to get to,” said Thomas, via Coventry Live.

“And then it’s something to evaluate at the end of the season.

“I don’t think I want to get caught up in something like that at the moment.”

Thomas has been a regular presence for Lampard’s side so far this season, which has caught the attention of a number of Premier League sides.

Brentford, Leeds and Everton have all been mentioned as a potential next destination for the 25-year-old, who is entering the final 12 months of his Coventry contract.

The Sky Blues confirmed new deals for Liam Kitching, Jay Dasilva and Milan van Ewijk last week, which has come as a boost to the first team squad.

But uncertainty remains for Thomas’ future with the Championship side amid their promotion battle.

Lampard’s side are currently top of the second division table following a 2-0 win away to West Brom on Saturday.

Goals from Ephron Mason-Clark and Jack Rudoni in the first half sealed three points for the Sky Blues, who moved three points clear of Middlesbrough in second.

Next up for Coventry is a trip to face an in-form Sheffield United on 25 February in a 7.45pm kick-off.

Bobby Thomas contract could depend on Premier League status

Thomas is heading into the final year of his deal, which gives him a lot of leverage with Coventry given the transfer interest in him at this stage.

If the Sky Blues are unable to convert their current position in the table into top flight status for next season, then Thomas could seek a move elsewhere.

At that point, it would be potentially better for the club to cash in, rather than risk losing him for nothing in 2027, especially given his potential transfer value.

This adds to the importance of promotion for Coventry, as the prospect of Premier League football will help entice players to stay at the CBS Arena, and could help them to attract the kind of talent that wouldn’t necessarily want to compete in the Championship.
