Boca Juniors were knocked out of the Copa Libertadores after a 1-0 defeat to Universidad Católica at La Bombonera, and will now enter the Copa Sudamericana play-offs.

Only a win in the final Group D match would have secured progress, but the Chilean side prevailed to finish top of the section. As reported by LaNumer12.com.ar, Boca’s continental campaign continues in the Sudamericana.

Claudio Úbeda’s team could not find a way through despite constant backing, and Leandro Paredes tried to dictate from midfield without reward.

Elsewhere, Cruzeiro beat Barcelona SC 4-0 in Brazil to reach 11 points and confirm second place behind the Chileans.

Group D ended with Universidad Católica on 13 points, Cruzeiro on 11, Boca on 7 and Barcelona SC on 3.

By finishing third, Boca drop into the Sudamericana round of 32, where Libertadores third-placed teams face Sudamericana group runners-up over two legs. As a Libertadores side, Boca will play the second leg away.

O’Higgins of Chile will be Boca’s opponents in the round of 32, with the first leg in the week of Wednesday 23 July and the return the following week.
