Boca began the year with a 0-0 friendly against Millonarios at La Bombonera in the inaugural Miguel Ángel Russo Cup, a new trophy to be played annually. There were encouraging spells, but finishing was lacking in a mixed opening that also offered minutes to fringe players.
According to LaNumer12.com.ar, Ander Herrera was the standout across his 45 minutes, linking neatly with Leandro Paredes from deep and repeatedly looking for the front line.
Agustín Marchesin had little to do and handled a rare angled strike, rated six. Juan Barinaga looked rushed and offered limited support to Brian Aguirre, rated five. Lautaro Di Lollo was tidy, Ayrton Costa defended strongly for a seven, and Lautaro Blanco was quiet for a five.
Paredes set the tempo from deep for a seven, his influence dipping once the Spaniard departed. Milton Delgado provided energy and balance for a seven, Aguirre showed flashes on the right for a six and Miguel Merentiel struggled to connect for a five. Exequiel Zeballos was lively, tried from range and had a late penalty to win it, but struck it poorly and the goalkeeper saved, rated six.
Williams Alarcón, Tomás Belmonte, Malcom Braida and Kevin Zenón came on to freshen things without changing the pattern. Coach Claudio Úbeda kept a similar core to last year, brought Aguirre in for Giménez and switched to a 4-3-3, but attacking issues persisted, with Úbeda marked at five. Boca face Olimpia in San Nicolás on Sunday.
