Boca rode their luck: poor display, Lanús scare, won it late

Boca snatched a dramatic 1-0 win over Lanús at La Bombonera in a match corresponding to the seventh round of the 2026 Torneo Clausura. Rodolfo Arruabarrena’s team won it on the last play thanks to a dramatic goal by Tomás Belmonte.

The Xeneize had a very rough time and has to thank Felipe Peña Biafore’s terrible finishing in front of goal, as he missed three clear chances with headers inside the blue-and-gold side’s box. Even so, with little to nothing, the home team managed to threaten the opposition goal.

Tomás Aranda’s absence was noticeable in the team’s build-up play, which improved with Leandro Paredes’ return in the second half. But even more important was the substitution of Tomás Belmonte for Milton Delgado, as he was the man responsible for the three points earned at La Bombonera.

After a huge save by Álvaro Montero, Boca’s counterattack was lethal. After receiving the ball at the edge of the box, Santiago Ascacibar — the Ruso — set up Toto like a lifelong number 10, who chipped it over Nahuel Losada as he came off his line. A great goal, and if it hadn’t gone in, it would have been a penalty by the Lanús goalkeeper, and a hugely important win after not showing their best image at home.

What’s next for Boca

The Xeneize will have to wait before playing again in the local tournament, as they must first face their Copa Argentina round-of-16 match. At the Mario Alberto Kempes in Córdoba, Arruabarrena’s side will take on Vélez, managed by Guillermo Barros Schelotto.

The match will be on Wednesday, September 2 at 9:15 p.m., and if they advance, their next opponent in the federal competition will be Racing, whom they recently drew 1-1 with in Avellaneda in the 2026 Torneo Clausura.
