Universidad Católica’s 2-0 win over Barcelona SC in Chile has reset Copa Libertadores Group D, and Boca now hold their fate in their own hands.
The result in San Carlos de Apoquindo closed matchday five and moved the Chileans top on 10 points, ahead of Cruzeiro on 8, Boca on 7 and Barcelona SC on 3. LaNumer12.com.ar notes that everything will be decided on the final day.
Boca will host the leaders at La Bombonera. The Chilean victory removed any route through with a draw, but a home win would seal a last 16 place.
That is because the first tiebreaker is head to head. Any Boca win would take them to 10 points alongside Católica, with only the meetings between the clubs counting. Boca won 2-1 in Santiago on matchday one, so another victory would lift them above the Chileans.
Even if Cruzeiro beat Barcelona in the other game to reach 11 points, Boca would finish second by edging Católica on head to head. The assignment is clear at La Bombonera, win and go through.
