Article image:Bojan Miovski signs: How Leeds United's perfect 2024 summer transfer window surely looks

FLW outline an ideal and realistic transfer window for Leeds United this summer.

Highlights

  • Leeds United plans to strengthen their squad for the Premier League return in 2024/25, with potential sales and new signings.
  • Key players may leave, while promising talents like Crysencio Summerville and Willy Gnonto could be on the move.
  • Incomings include goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, right-back Ki-Jana Hoever, and striker Bojan Miovski, among others.

Leeds United are seeking a return to the Premier League again in 2024/25, which would see a number of changes this summer in the transfer market.

Not least, there are plenty of players who left the club due to loan clauses in their contract who will need to have their future at Elland Road resolved as quickly as possible, in order for the club to then focus on incomings for Daniel Farke.

Leeds have decisions to make on many current squad members between now and September, too, with fringe players in need of a move elsewhere to kick on in their respective careers, whilst recruitment calls will be well underway following Archie Gray's sale to Tottenham and Joe Rodon's arrival the other way.

With promotion very much in mind, here, we take a look at what Leeds' window could look like in a dream scenario for Farke and co. this summer. A realistic situation is likely to see the likes of Crysencio Summerville and Willy Gnonto move on.

However, given the criteria in this scenario, we are able to retain at least one of Leeds' key attacking players and build around the core that took them to the cusp of promotion last season as well.

Out: Rasmus Kristensen

Rasmus Kristensen played 30 games for the Whites in his solitary season, scoring three times and registering one assist, too.

The club will almost certainly take whatever they can get for Kristensen during the summer following his loan stint at AS Roma, as he has been a largely forgettable signing, and most of the players who received loan moves are unlikely to be involved next season.

Out: Joe Gelhardt (loan)

Joe Gelhardt's future in West Yorkshire is unclear, with his development stalling over the last couple of seasons.

However, there is talent there, and the club could instead seek a loan in order to get his career back on track, with the idea of utilising him in 2025/26 instead.

Out: Diego Llorente

Diego Llorente joined AS Roma on loan last year, midway through the campaign.

Relegation saw another move for the Spaniard as it was announced in the summer that he would re-join the club.

There is the potential for that to be made permanent, whilst he has suitors in La Liga as well.

Out: Max Wöber

The Austrian defender only joined the Whites in January of last year but he has been fairly decent on loan with Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Bundesliga, and there remains every chance he has permanent suitors in a top-flight league somewhere this summer.

There may be somewhat of a changing of the guard for Leeds currently occurring.

Some leadership figures with experience and know-how ought to be retained and one could be the 32-year-old, but it feels less and less likely by the week, with Pascal Struijk and Ethan Ampadu preferred at left-sided centre-back last year.

Out: Charlie Cresswell

Charlie Cresswell is in the same position as players like Gelhardt in many ways, with developmental minutes needed at senior level, as opposed to languishing within Leeds' reserves or on the fringes of the first-team with very little game time to speak of last term.

Leeds may make sales that can be major PSR wins, and with Cresswell one of those this summer, his departure is expected.

Out: Illan Meslier

Continuity is the key to promotion in many areas, especially for the players that took Leeds to the cusp of promotion in 2024.

However, Illan Meslier may feel like his time in West Yorkshire is coming to an end this summer, especially with just two years remaining on his contract. His sale would also represent a big financial win for PSR this summer.

Carl Rushworth

Leeds selling Meslier would mean that they are in the market for a goalkeeper this summer and a good option for Farke's side is Swansea City's Brighton loanee, Carl Rushworth.

He could be an upgrade on the Frenchman in reliability and consistency terms.

The goalkeeper won the Swans' Player of the Season award, and he has also starred during previous loan spells with both Walsall and Lincoln City in the EFL, and is now perhaps hoping for a move higher up the league or to the Premier League.

Born in Halifax, Leeds could sign him from whatever is raised by Meslier's sale.

Ki-Jana Hoever (loan)

One of the Championship's best right-backs last season came in the form of Ki-Jana Hoever, who spent the year on loan with Stoke City from Wolves, and is finally beginning to realise the potential that saw Liverpool bring him to England in 2018 after he had impressed in Ajax's youth teams.

Leeds would be an ideal destination for Hoever for a number of reasons. He could be utilised as an attacking or defensive-minded right-back, but such is his quality now that he should be allowed to flaunt his notable attacking prowess.

His availability is also exceptional, which is badly needed at full-back.

Paddy McNair

Free agents who provide depth should not be overlooked this summer, and Leeds are going to need new centre-backs, with Cooper out of contract and Cresswell hardly involved and in need of regular game time to develop further in his career elsewhere.

A powerful defensive player with real quality in possession, Paddy McNair could be a starter if Leeds need cover for the likes of Rodon and Pascal Struijk, so that Farke can avoid dropping Ethan Ampadu into centre-back as often.

He would provide high quality cover and McNair is also a good system fit of Leeds' starting duo are ever injured.

Anselmo Garcia MacNulty

It has been reported as recently as last month that Leeds are continuing to monitor the situation of PEC Zwolle's Spanish-Irish defender, Anselmo Garcia MacNulty, as per Dutch outlet, Voetbal International.

He has mainly featured at left-back for Zwolle for the 2023/24 season and could be the depth needed behind Junior Firpo.

However, the 21-year-old has spent most of his career at left-sided centre-back, too.

Regardless, his versatility and ball-playing ability would make him an astute signing for Farke, as well as being viewed as a short and long-term replacement for numerous centre-back options in terms of his development.

Callum O'Hare

Even if one of Summerville or Gnonto were to stay, extra quality is required in the line of three behind Leeds' centre-forward, which is where Callum O'Hare is capable of operating.

He is a player who thrives in transition with his carrying ability and plays with plenty of personality, which Leeds fans will love.

The versatile 26-year-old could be a welcome addition, especially when factoring in his contractual situation with Coventry City. With his contract currently expiring this summer, his profile would be a good alternative option to other more expensive players, and whoever secures his signature will be acquiring an eight-figure player for free.

Bojan Miovski

Bojan Miovski has been nothing short of magnificent during the 2023/24 season, scoring in numerous competitions and building up an impressive tally of goals.

He could be the crowning jewel of Leeds' attack and where most of the transfer kitty is put to secure a deal.

The 25-year-old striker has scored 25 goals in all competitions and at a rate of nearly once every two matches during the 2023/24 campaign, and certainly deserves the opportunity to thrive elsewhere.
