After scoring the decisive spot-kick in the Coppa Italia last month, Lazio midfielder Kenneth Taylor silenced the Renato Dall’Ara once more, this time by scoring a brace against Bologna in Serie A.
Vincenzo Italiano maintained his 4-2-3-1 formation, but made some tweaks to the lineup that eliminated Roma from the Europa League on Thursday. Santiago Castro led the line, supported by Riccardo Orsolini, Federico Bernardeschi, and Jonathan Rowe, while Nikola Moro and Simon Sohm started in the double pivot.
For his part, the suspended Maurizio Sarri only replaced the injured Mattia Zaccagni with Pedro, who joined Daniel Maldini and Gustav Isaksen in the attacking trident, while Alessio Romagnoli reclaimed his starting berth at the back after overcoming a slight physical issue. Patric once again acted as a makeshift Regista, playing between Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and Kenneth Taylor.
Bologna had the bulk of possession during the first half, but they weren’t able to create too many dangerous chances. Orslini had a double chance blocked by Nuno Tavares and Taylor, but the highlight of the first 45 minutes was Moro’s long-range rocket that crashed against the woodwork.
On the other hand, Lazio sat back and tried to capitalize on any spaces the hosts left at the back. Isaksen, Dele-Bashiru, and Adam Marusic combined to put the latter through on goal on three occasions, but the full-back’s final delivery left much to be desired.
The second half began on a sour note for the Aquile, as a complacent back-pass from Dele-Bashiru forced Motta to leave his goal in a desperate attempt to beat Castro to the ball, but the goalkeeper ended up giving away a penalty kick for tripping the Argentine striker.
Nevertheless, the youngster had the last laugh, but he managed to catch Orsolini after guessing the right corner.
After a rather uneventful stretch that only witnessed a few chances from Orsolini and Isaksen, Lazio opened the scoring in the 72nd minute almost out of nowhere. Boulaye Dia’s shot was blocked by Bologna’s defences, but Taylor was in the right place at the right time to pounce on the loose ball.
The Dutch midfielder kept his composure to slide the ball past Federico Ravaglia, who didn’t expect it at his near post.
With Bologna pushing forward in search of an equalizer, spaces opened up for Lazio at the back. While Matteo Cancellieri wasted three chances, Taylor showcased his slick finishing touch one more. The Dutchman formed a sublime triangle with Tijjani Noslin and Dia. The latter put the midfielder through on goal, and he managed to beat Ravaglia once more.
The Biancocelesti thus extended their winning streak to three while simultaneously eclispising Bologna in the Serie A standings. They will now head to the international break in eighth place with 43 points in the bag.
