Bolton Wanderers are back in the Championship after a convincing 4-1 victory over Stockport County in the League One play-off final at Wembley.

The Wanderers made the perfect start and went ahead within five minutes when Rúben Rodrigues capitalised on a mistake from goalkeeper Corey Addai to fire home from close range.

Stockport thought they had responded almost immediately through Adama Sidibeh, but the goal was ruled out following a VAR review for a foul in the build-up.

Sidibeh eventually did get his goal before the half-hour mark, glancing a header into the bottom corner to bring County level after a strong spell of pressure.

The Whites regained control midway through the second half when Kyle Wootton unfortunately diverted the ball into his own net under pressure inside the box. From there, Steven Schumacher’s side looked far more comfortable and sealed promotion in style.

Substitute Sam Dalby produced the moment of the match with a superb acrobatic finish to make it 3-1 before Rodrigues added his second from the penalty spot in stoppage time. The spot-kick came after former Bolton defender Josh Dacres-Cogley was sent off for pulling Ibrahim Cissoko’s hair inside the area.

The result ends Bolton’s seven-year absence from the Championship, while Stockport suffer Wembley disappointment for the second time this season.
