The Whites won the play-offs after coming fifth in the League One table, earning their place in the second tier for the first time since 2016.

Steven Schumacher has overseen the addition of players like Luca Stephenson from Liverpool, as the club looks to build a team capable of surviving at this level.

David Watson, Ben Davies and Akin Famewo have all also joined on a permanent basis, with Kyliane Dong signing on loan from Augsburg.

But their transfer business is unlikely to end there, with the market open until 1 September.

Bolton have also been linked with the signing of Theo Bair on loan, with the 26-year-old out of favour at Auxerre.

Bolton’s recruitment team deserve to be trusted

When asked about the club’s recruitment of Bair, FLW’s Bolton fan pundit Liam O’Meara has claimed that the step-up to the Championship has required some slight changes in their strategy.

But he believes that the Whites have earned his trust after their transfer work in the last 12 to 18 months helped secure promotion from League One.

“I think it’s clear looking at Bolton’s transfer strategy that they are looking to add quality, but they are maybe looking outside the box to do so,” O’Meara told Football League World.

“It’s no secret that the step-up to the Championship is quite difficult, and the players that we secured on loan tended to be from the Championship over the last couple of years.

“So, those options are maybe a little more limited, as we become more of a direct rival to those clubs.

“I’m not surprised that a lot of the names that we’re seeing aren’t necessarily household names.

“What I would say is, the last 12–18 months, the Bolton recruitment team seems to have got more right than wrong, and we secured the promotion off the back of some really effective loan deals.

“So, while I appreciate on paper it doesn’t look the most obvious choice, I’m happy that Bolton are doing the metrics that may matter, so I’m all in on whoever we do go for this window.”

Bolton will be looking to bolster many areas of Schumacher’s side this season due to the step-up they’re taking from League One to the Championship.

The club will be keen to ensure they avoid a relegation fight despite limited resources, and could see the likes of Portsmouth as a recent example to follow.

Pompey came up in 2024, and have been able to compete under John Mousinho despite lacking the spending power of a lot of their rivals.

But the relegation battle is likely to be quite fierce this season, particularly with Sheffield Wednesday now down in League One.

The Owls’ financial issues last year meant they occupied 24th almost the entire season, leaving just two spots for the relegation scrap at the end of the campaign.

Schumacher previously led Plymouth Argyle to promotion in 2023, and the 42-year-old played a role in their survival in the following season.

But his departure for Stoke City didn’t work out, as he lasted just 32 games in charge before being dismissed.

This led him to the path of Bolton, where he took over in January 2025, overseeing their promotion 18 months later.

The Whites will begin their season on 15 August with a home clash against Preston North End.

Theo Bair signing is not a guarantee of success

Bair has a mixed record of leading the line since making the switch to European football from MLS in 2022.

His most prolific campaign came with Motherwell, where he contributed 15 goals and six assists from 38 league appearances in 2023/24.

However, the forward has struggled for the same kind of consistency in front of goal since moving to Auxerre, which is a warning to Bolton.

But Bair’s positive loan spell at Lausanne-Sport saw him score six times from 23 games, which shows some signs that he could still be a positive addition to Schumacher’s side.
